And 14 Phillip IlIlln:!, Auolralia, And 15 Valencia, Spoin, And 16 Arrowhead Raceway Bv SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 1 There was a full program of racing scheduled for Wednesday night at Edge Promotions' Arrowhead Speedway. The tracked was prepped beautifully and a good roster of riders were on hand. Halfway through the program, however, an electrical box in tum four started smoking, and after 20 minutes the problem proved too great to fix, and announcer Bruce Randers called the event. It was the Orange Show lights were the problem. Edge Promotions' lights were working just fine. In a bit of comic relief, Shawn ·Mad Dog· McConnell mounted a flashlight to his bike and took a couple of laps around the track. (Did he just invent ·Stealth Speedway Racing·...?) Even though they were unable to finish the program, there was some good racing as the first Division riders worked their way up the program. In the first Handicap heat, ·Gorgeous" Gary Hicks came from long yardage and got through traffic with two laps to go and took the lead and a move up the ladder to the semi. Shaun Harmatiuk, McConnell and Mark Adams also made the transfer. John DeFries came from low yardage and gave a very good account of himself as he held off the pack to win the second Handicap heat. Moving up the ladder with him was ·Fast" Ed Castro, Randy ·The Rocket" DiFrancesco and Dukie Ermolenko. The final Handicap heat had Marvin Sonnier on top for three laps before Bobby ·Cowboy" Krips took over and brought it on home. Bart ·Simpson" Bast got through for second, with Sonnier holding on for third. The final transfer went to Bobby ·Boogaloo" Schwartz. The first Handicap semi was a repeat for Hicks, who was really going good. He c.me from long y.rdage on two laps to take the lead from H.rm.tiuk. One lap later, McConnell came undemeath H.rmatiuk to take second. With only three spots for the main, Harmatiuk h.d to hang on to third - but it was not to be, as Krips grabbed it aw.y from him in a superclose fmish. In the second Handicap semi, DeFries went out strong .nd held on until the white flag. C.slTO, working the dirt on the outside. made an awesome move to take the lead. Ermolenko w.s also on the g.s and he got through to take second. DeFries held off Bast for third. Hicks was the man to beet as he came b.ck in the first Scratch he.t and went wire to wire with no one able to gel close. DeFries, by virtue of his second, would move to the semis. It took Bast one lap to find his was around Ermolenko in the second Scratch heat, but second was good enough to move on. In the third heat, it was gate, race and win to Costro, with Krips moving to the semi with him. The ·Master of the Gate," Schwartz, along with fellow veteran McConnell, showed the kids how it's done in the final Scratch heat. And that would be the last race of the night, as the lights went out at Arrowhead. The good news is that it will be continued next week.
