mounted Bayer, Vangsnes, Gillespie and Villarreal. Honda rider Blackwell finished sixth, giving him sixth overall on the day. The 250cc Novice class belonged to Yamaha pilot Tim Long, who posted a 2-1 tally for the overall. John Washington claimed second with a 1-3 score, while Julian Salinas Barrera finished third, going 5-2. The Cycle Shop-backed Lee Uribe finished out the day by going 3·4 on his Husqvama 250. Travis Howard took fIfth overall on a 4-5 score, while Suzuki speedster Pedro Wilbert crashed out for a DNF. Also, did we mention that KTM 520-mounted, O'Neal-backed Phil Rimes stepped down to race in the 250cc Novice? It's true; Rimes is still on the injured reserve list and is not back up to "Open Cash" speed yet. Rimes ran away with the 250cc Noviceclass victory but stepped down at the awards presentation, giving up the position. Twelve racers gated for the 50cc Junior Glen Helen Raceway Park: Ty Schwartz (109) beat Scott Davis (117) to win both the Evolution 125cc and Over 30 classes In Southwest Vintage Racing Group action In Devore, Califomia. dismissed it: old guys don't want to ride 125s, he fIgured. But Davis was persistent, and by this, the fourth round of the series, the class had blossomed into the most popular of all. The eighth-liter action got under way in the fIrst race of the day, the traditional half-hour Ironman mota, which saw runaway winner Schwartz nearly lap the third-place fInisher, new Expert (and former road racer) Robert Miller, on his Honda CR125. The racing was much closer in the combined Over 30/0ver 40 contest. In his usual fashion, Doughty, on his mighty Maico 490, grabbed the holeshot in both motos, but in very unusual fashion he was pursued by a horde of buzzing 125s. And both times, Doughty's Maico was swallowed up by Schwartz's YZ and Davis' Kawasaki KX 125, the trio fInishing in that order. SYRG fIrst-timer Randy Skinner retired from mota one when his Suzuki RM125's motor went south, but he borrowed a similar mount from Contreras for moto two and fInished a close fourth, behind Doughty. The racing rose to fever pitch in the Evo 125cc class, which Schwartz also won, though not without a challenge from Davis. Schwartz won moto one by a healthy margin, and when Davis crashed hard on the second lap of mota two, it looked like Schwartz would score an easy victory. But Schwartz's bike started to slow down on the final two go-arounds and Davis almost caught him: if he hadn't fallen, he'd certainly have scored the moto win and the overall. There was a heated battle for third between two Honda CR 125 pilots, and the position eventually went to Arizona resident Don Ruffin, over Califomian Miller. The "Battle of the Eds" continued in this double-points-paying event. Ed Stovin and Ed Tashjian vied for the series lead that will ultimately determine who'll wear the number-one plate next season, and score a free weekend's rental from EI Monte RV. Stovin was forced to sit out the previous series round with an ankle injury, and in an attempt to make up for lost points he brought out "Old Faithful: his 1971 Husqvama 400CR. He had a good day, too, topping the Pre-1 972 class on his Husky, the Evo 2 500cc class on his Maleo 400, and the Modem Support class on his Yamaha YZ250. Tashjian, meanwhile, lost a little ground. Though he topped the Evo 3 class and finished second in the lronman race on his Suzuki RM400, his RM 125 let him down, forcing him to retire from both Evo 125 motos with mechanical problems. It's going to be a close race. Results IRONMAN EVa NOV: 1. Mike Gomel (Yam); 2. Jason Doty (Hus). IRONMA.N EVO EX: I. Ty Schwartz. (Yam): 2. Ed Tashjian (Suz.); 3. Robert MIller (Hon).
