The Scratch main was won by Josh Larsen, while "Fast" Ed Castro took the win on the Handicap side of the program. The first Scratch semi had Castro on the pole, with National champ Chris "The Kid" Manchester in two. On the outside were Larsen and Bart "Simpson" Bast in three and four. Bast got the best gate, but Larsen got to the corner first, and it was a race for second - and Castro made it a good one as he worked the outside dirt. Bast was able to hold him off, and he would transfer to the main event with Larsen. Castro and Manchester were headed to the lastchance qualifier. In the second Scratch semi, Bryan Thompson was on the pole, with Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell in two. On the outside were "Flyin'" Mike Faria and Randy "The Rocket" DiFrancesco. Faria got a great gate, but McConnell was riding the low line cue I e along with DiFrancesco and they came out of turn two running onetwo. Faria was having some major bike problems, and he ended up with fourth; he would get another shot in the LCQ, along with Thompson. McConnell and DiFrancesco were on their way to the main. In the LCQ. the pole went to Thompson, with Faria in two and Manchester and Castro in three and four. It was over when the tapes came up, as Manchester was gone; he would be the final rider in the Scratch main. Manchester drew the pole for the Scratch main, with DiFrancesco in two and McConnell in three. On the outside were Larsen and Bast. lt was the Larsen show. He outgated and outran the field. It looked like a freight train, as the field could nothing more than follow him home. Manchester was second, and it was just the reverse of their National meeting; it's looking like it will be a very interesting year. DiFrancesco got third, with Bast and McConnell rounding out the field. The Denim Doctor Challenge pitted Manchester, Faria, Schwartz, Castro and Bast against each other in one-lap races, with the final two going mano a mano for two laps. The n e _ 50 MAV29,2002 53
