that more than 120 bikes were about to give it. Several riders decided not to race after walking the track, one of whom was last year's series champion, Aaron Wegner. The Expert "M" class started with Brad Benjamin earning the first holeshot of the season. Using his familiarity with the Portland track, Benjamin kept his Yamaha up front for the first lap. Then Groves/Baldy's All Bike-backed Brian Dunlap took over and pulled about a 30-second lead, but the muddy conditions were about to take a toll on the Honda rider. Meanwhile, Parlin was riding fairly conservatively in fourth. "I was trying to find a rhythm early in the race, just watching the other guys' lines," said Parlin. "I didn't really find a groove until around one hour into it. Then things just started to click. I think my suspension was set up really good for the conditions." After getting around his fellow Lansing Cycle-sponsored rider Corey Calkins for third, Parlin chased down Benjamin and moved into second. The leader, Dunlap, saw his lead shrink to around 20 seconds after he quickly stopped for gas. As the two riders approached the white flag for a last-lap dogfight to the finish, Dunlaps' Honda came to a halt. Dunlap was visibly upset that his bike called it quits when he was so close to winning his first overall. Parlin crossed the finish line first, with Benjamin second and Calkins a minute back in third. Moose/Tech Care/No Toil-sponsored Mike Stapula finished fourth, despite having clutch problems throughout the race. Even though his bike died prior to completing his last lap, Dunlap earned fifth for his efforts. "I thought Dunlap's bike sounded a little funny when I came up on him," said Parlin of his pass on the Honda rider. "I guess he gave me that one; I thought it was odd that I didn't hear him back there after I got by." The top non-expert rider came out of the 250cc class, as Marty Schrauben used his motocross skills to earn first in his class and sixth overall. Scott Barclay was next in the overall with a seventh, earning sixthplace points in the Expert class. The 125cc "E" class winner was Kawasaki rider Chad Ebel, who kept his bike running for 10 laps and earned a well-deserved eighth overall. Shawmut Hills-sponsored Mark Spore had a race-long duel with David Allen Racing's Clint Hammerle in the Vet class, with Spore finishing 21 seconds ahead of Hammerle for the class win. The two Yamaha pilots placed ninth and 10th overall, respectively. eN PerUand Trail Riders Pertland, Michigan Results: April 28, 2002 (Raund 1] O/A: I. Corey Parlin (KTM); 2. Brad Benjamin (Yom); 3.
