son Paul and Pasquerilla swapped positions from the earlier Formula 500cc race, as Paul grabbed second and Pasquerilla was third. David Rutherford, on the Ted Hubbard BSA single, took the 500cc GP honors, while Scott McCain, on the Quick Bikes Bultaco, cruised to the win in 200cc GP. In Sunday's Vintage Six contest, William Mayfield, on his Baxley Trailer Company FZR1000, took the win over Dale Burroughs, on the Suzuki of Seneca GSX-Rll 00. Burroughs is the former champion in this class. Ray Hickman took his 129 Race Team Suzuki home third. The new-for-2002 Vintage Seven class is broken up into two divisions Middleweight and Heavyweight. David Skites took his Yamaha 250 to the Middleweight win as well as the overall. His nimble 250 was a good match for this short and tight track. Eric Reed took second in Middleweight, in front of Roger Shelton. Burroughs was the Heavyweight winner, over Eric Bozell and Hickman. eN DANV[l£,VA,APR.28 n a misty morning in Danville, Virginia, the Southeast's best gathered at Birch Creek Raceway to determine a champion or two. The competition was tough and the racing was bar to bar. Chad Newton pulled the holeshot in the first 125cc A moto, leading Isha Wood and Chad Lough through the first turn. Newton led the first lap until he was passed by Wood entering the first turn for the second time. Newton pursued yet couldn't retake the lead. At the checkers, it was Wood, Newton and Lough. In moto two, Newton was once again at the point with another holeshot, and the battle began as Lough and Wood gave chase. In the snake pit, Wood made a run on Lough. In the following turn, Wood put a block-pass on Newton. Lough also got under Newton and moved into second. Lough never let Wood out of his sights. As the two leaders checked out, Newton was overtaken by Mike Martin (who placed sixth in moto one), who finished third this time out. Newton's 2-4 score gave him third overall. Lough tried and tried but was simply outpowered by Wood's YZ250F. The overall order was Wood (1-1), Lough (3-2) and Newton (2-4). O z => " ~:ih •. I " ffi a; -=- ..-.,_..,e> i:i ~ 200 GP: I. Pennisi Big at Birch Creek GREG SUMNER w blldege &rend Prix Recewey Telle.ge, AJeheme 1leslI1ts: april Z7, ZDOZ (Round 31 Virginia State Championship Birch Creek Motorsports By a; Lough got revenge in the 250cc A contest by beating Wood in the second moto to capture that title. Then he followed that up with a 1-1 tally to win the Over 25 A class as well. Scott Shipley had a very good day. Winning all four motos in the Over 30 A and Over 35 A classes. Shipley pulled the holeshot in three out of four starts. In the second Over 30 A moto, Shipley passed Allen Alford over the triple to finish 1-1. In the Over 30 B class, Anthony Pennisi fought off a late-moto charge by Ron Jones in moto two. This gave Pennisi a 1-1 score and a Virginia State Championship. B.J. Huntsinger won the 125cc B and 250cc B classes with a four-moto sweep. Huntsinger fought off Chase Whitten in the two 250cc B motos and also beat Whitten in moto one of the 125cc B class. A second-moto crash by Whitten allowed David Bauer to capture second overall, while Randy Newkirk's 3-3 tally earned him third overall. Whitten finished fourth overall. In the 85cc (14-15) class, Wes Gauldin pulled the holeshot and checked out. Gauldin dominated moto one until a nasty crash in the snake pit sidelined him for the day. Yet one's misfortune is another's victory: Eric Brown stepped up and won three of four motos and the overall in the 85cc (14-15) and Supermini 85-105 (12-15) classes. Birch Creek Motorsports: Anthony Pennisi (19) fought off a late-second-moto charge by Ron Jones (3) to finish 1-1 in the Over 30 B class and take home a Virginia State Championship title from Danville. The competition in the Youth classes was stiff. In the 50cc (7-8) class, Jacob Hayes of Greensboro, North Carolina, scored 1- 1 finishes. Jacob Knable of Pawhaten, Virginia, and Ryan Carter of Reidsville, North Carolina, swapped runner-up finishes; in the tough two-moto battle, Cobra rider Knable edged out KTM-mounted Carter in the final corner, giving Knable second overall. A classic battle in the 65cc (7-9) class provided a great show! Moto one became a three-way battle for first. The little guys came to race, as Steven Good, Ryan Zimmer and Russell Boswell Jr. diced for the championship. The three went at it bar to bar for two solid motos. As they rounded the last turn, Boswell was leading and Zimmer was running second; they locked bars, which opened up the door for Good to pass both of them for the win. Boswell finished second and Zimmer was third. Good (2-1) was first overall, Zimmer (1-3) was second, and Boswell (3-2) third. Samuel Fitzwater of Reidsville, North Carolina, rode his Honda to a 1-1 tally to capture the Schoolboy (12-15) class win. Edwin Anderson finished a strong second in moto one. After tallying a DNF in mota one, Jeb GaSKill came back and upset Anderson by finishing second in moto two.' Lucas Bauerr passed Anderson in the snake pit to secure third overall on a 6-3 score. Anderson finished fourth. CN 8S (12-13): I. Brod Horr; 2. Ryon Shonyo; 3. ChtJd Muterspaugh. 85 (14-15): 1. Eric Brown; 2. John Dodson: 3. Glen Martin. OIL MINI 60·85 (7-11): 1. Mork Williams.
