strong, as he worked up from a poor start to take fifth. He could only manage an 11th in the moto-two slop, but he was still relatively content with his seventh-overall finish. In only his second race back follOWing serious injuries incurred early in the supercross series, Pro Circuit/ Chevy Trucks/Kawasaki rider Bobby Bonds rode steady and smart. He collected 11-10 moto finishes for eighth overall. He was followed in the overall tally by Blimpie Suzuki's Buddy Antunez, whose strong sixth-place moto-one finish was the best ride he's had in some time. Completing the top 10 was Georgian Matt Walker, who is fighting to keep his Pro Circuit/Chevy Trucks/Kawasaki ride. Stewart now has three out of four moto wins on the year, and a 20point lead in the standings. Langston is second, just ahead of Reed. Morris, Pennsylvania, May 26 Round 4 - Southwick. Massachusetts, June 9 m Own Race: 125cc 2~ Emesto Fonseca After running as high as third in the first moto, the Team Honda rider slipped back to finish fifth, but he looked like the Fonseca that made some 250cc SX podiums this year. The wet-and-muddy condi· tions of the second moto proved less to his liking, however, and he suffered a horrendous start. He climbed to 11th by the finish for a combined placement of seventh overall. "Mike Brown passed me on the last lap, and I was kind of mad, but that's how racing goes: Fonseca said. "It's better than last week. What I'm going to try to do from now on is improve on my last results." 2~Branden Jesseman Like his Blimpie Suzuki teammate, Smith, Jesseman's score in the second-moto mudfest was better than that of the first moto. and he seemed to enjoy the sloppy conditions. Jesseman pulled third-place starts in each race, but in the first moto, he slipped to eighth, while in the second, he held his position until being passed by Stewart. He held third after that. "It wasn't too bad at first, but then it started pouring there half way through," he said. "There was water that was up to the pipe in some of the tums. It was kind of gnarly, but it was also fun.' ] Mike Brown Poor starts and charges through the pack left the defending champ with a fourth and an eighth in the two motos, as well as a cut on his toe that required stitches to close. Brown gamered a sixth-overall fmish and leaves Califomia fifth in points. (Left) Following an inspiring runner-up ride In moto one, Grant Langston faltered in the second outing and placed sixth. He stili made the podium, but his healing knee was quite sore after the race. lAbove) Chad Reed dealt well with a loss of brakes in the moto-two mud, going 3-4 for second overall and hanging on to third In the title chase_ cue' • n e ... s MAY 29, 2002 27
