By KIT PALMER PHOTOS BY STEVE BRUHN SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 12 t might've been the start to a new season, and it might've been an entirely different kind of racing, but the name at the top of the leaderboard was the same - Ricky Carmichael. The Team Honda rider certainly made the transition from supercross to motocross look easy, as the recently crowned SX champ won both motos at the highly anticipated openjng round of the AMA/ Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship Series at Glen Helen Raceway. And you can pretty much say that he dominated. The defending champ jumped out to early leads in both motos and rode off into the sunset with a 1-1 sweep, a much better start to the series than he experienced in this year's supercross series (in which he crashed and rang his bell) and last year's outdoor series (in which he had a losing bout with a hay bale at this same venue). But things were quite different this time, as Carmichael had two flawless rides at Glen Helen, pretty much leading from start to finish in both motos, though his teammate Sebastien Tortelli did give him something to 8 MAY 22, 2002' II: U II: I • n • _ s
