As practice continued on Saturday, predictions as to who might win on Sunday became increasingly difficult. Many top riders were lapping within a second of each other. Former All Japan 125cc GP Champion Tada Ito's Aprilia struck a bird in flight at speed in qualifying, crushing the front of his fairing and scaring the bejeezus out of him. The diminutive 34-year-old Tada blamed the bird for his less-than-perfect qualifying times. By Sunday, Iso had secured the pole, followed by Hanford, Morton and Shawn Herrera, all within 1.4 seconds of each other. Wilson, Neves, Moore and Ito filled the second row. Morton nailed the start and led a tightly packed swarm of more than 20 GP machines into turn one. The pack made it through intact and followed Morton, who led at a blistering pace for the first seven laps until Iso, trapped in traffic for three laps, broke free and chased him down. Nobi made the pass for the lead, but Morton stuck to him like glue. They ran one-two, separated by a fraction of a second throughout the race, slowly pulling away from the pack, until a miscalculated fuel load caused Morton to run out of gas with the checkered flag in sight.
