California Racing Club Ounestown Series Round 1: Los Angeles County Raceway with Mark Allen nipping at his back fender. Round two saw Smith get another holeshot, over Howe, Colson and Bryon Ward. Howe stayed upright this time and hounded Smith throughout the race to make him work a little harder for the win. Durrer went 2-4 to top the 4-3 score of Colson for second overall. Rowe's runner-up performance earned him fifth in the final standings. Smith and Rowe went at it in both Four-Stroke motos, with the Rice Motorsports/ Answer/White Brothers/Arnette-backed Smith prevailing in convincing fashion. Jeremy Ferro went 3·3 to make it a Honda sweep of the class. Billy Mercier led the 250cc Pro first-moto charge for a little over a lap before Michael Young forced his way underneath him to run out front. Young inched away for the win, with Mercier outrunning a fast-approaching Jeff Eide to claim second. STORV AND PHOTOS BV GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,APR.28 he Honda-mounted duo of Daryl Ecklund and Shane Smith were definitely on top of their game as they claimed double-class wins at the opening round of California Racing Club's 25th annual J.B. Memorial Dunestown Series. Ecklund appeared to have the Los Angeles County Raceway track wired, as he swept both the 125cc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes. Smith was equally impressive en route to the 250cc Intermediate and Four-stroke class victories. Anthony Barbacovi exited tum one with the 125cc Intermediate firstmoto holeshot, ahead of Donnie Durrer, Steve Colson and Ecklund. Ecklund wasted little time in making a run at the top spot, and within a single circuit of the J.B. Memorial track he had his Chaparral/Honda/Waste Management/RCP/Thor-sponsored CR 125 out front. Durrer was around Barbacovi a lap later in an attempt to catch the fleeing Ecklund. However, Ecklund wasn't about to be caught, and he got to the checkers first with some 10 seconds to spare over Durrer. Barbacovi was third, a safe distance ahead of Colson and Adam Gragg. And also just like in moto one, Ecklund would dominate the race, taking the win by an even bigger margin this time out. Barbacovi and Durrer fought over second place until Durrer went down hard at the midway point. Colson followed Barbacovi across the line for third and third overall. Both Schoolboy motos were more of the same for Ecklund. Barbacovi provided some competition for a lap or so before Ecklund checked out. Aaron Graham went 3-3 behind Bar· bacovi, with Casey White (4-4) and Andrew Rhoads (5-5) rounding out the top five. Smith started things off with a wire-to-wire romp in the first 250cc Intermediate moto, aboard his CRF450R. Scott Howe kept Smith honest for a couple of laps before a crash dropped him to an eventual seventh-place finish. Durrer worked up from his midpack start to hold off Vincent Rhoads at the finish for second place. Fourth went to Colson, n e _ s was short-lived, as by lap two Young was out front, where he would stay to collect the first-place payback. Sterling Zepeda was another double-class winner on the day. The American Suzuki/SVC/ Axo/Renthal/N-Style-backed RM85 pilot went four for four to easily dominate the 85cc (14-16) and Supermini classes. Benny Breck finished second to Zepeda in all four races. Kevin Bey took third in the 85cc (14-16) field, with Travis Bright doing the same in the Superminis. Eide inherited the lead but had his hands full with Mercier, who hounded Eide for the next five laps before finally finding some daylight to make the pass. By that time, Young was right there to also get around Eide and apply some pressure to Mercier on the last lap. Mercier and Young swapped the lead back and forth a couple of times, with Young coming out on top. Eide finished a close third, ahead of Shaun Trabert and Mike Meadows. Young led the first couple of laps of the opening 125cc Pro moto before stalling his YZ250F. Eide went on to take the win, over Young and George LaMonte. Eide's second-moto lead
