By MARK BUCHANAN CHARLESTOWN, IN, ~. 30 S cott Craven, on a White Brothers/Suspension Works Yamaha, and Scott Metz, on a MotoXtremes/ Honda of Troy mount, battled hard for top honors at Podium One's season opener in Charlestown, Indiana. Nearly 400 riders turned out for the first day of Podium One's Easter Weekend Extravaganza, and the racing action was excellent. The Podium One crew made several changes to the track in the off season, including the addition of an over-and-under tunnel in the Supercross section, and they had the track in good shape after rain earlier in the week. Craven nailed the holeshot in both 250cc A motos. King Smith, on an Answer Yamaha, and Metz trailed Craven off the first turn, and Metz moved around Smith to pressure Craven for the lead. Craven led the first lap, but Metz took over the lead on lap two. Smith and Derrick Dewitt, on a Turn One Motorsports Honda, battled hard for third, with Smith taking the position for good on the third lap. Dewitt took fourth, followed by Jason Schmidt, on an S&S Powersports KTM. Dewitt and Honda rider Jeremy Kershner followed Craven at the start of the second moto. Metz moved into second place on the first lap, in front of Dewitt and Smith, but Craven held him off for the second-moto win. Metz finished a close second, followed by Dewitt and Smith, with Schmidt taking fifth again. Blake took the holeshot in the first 125cc A moto on a Paul's Cycle Supply Yamaha, in front of Husqvarna-mounted John Kinnemeyer and Suzuki jockey Rod Marshall. Blake held the lead for two laps and Metz moved into second place on the first lap, in front of Marshall. Metz passed Blake for the win on lap three, with Blake finishing a close second, in front of Marshall. Smith took fourth, and Buddy Brookes finished fifth on a Max Pitts Suzuki. Yamaha of Troy's Mike Ivers got the holeshot in the second moto, in front of Brookes and Metz. Metz quickly took the lead and pulled away for the win. Blake moved into second place, followed closely by Smith, with Marshall finishing fourth, in front of Brookes. Metz took the overall in front of Blake, and Smith (4-3) claimed third, in front of Marshall and Brookes. "Flyin'" Ryan Sipes had a great day on his Podium One;Team Green Kawasakis, taking the wins in the 250cc B, 125cc Band 16-24 classes. Sipes nailed the holeshot and went wire to wire for the win in both 250cc B motos. Husqvarna pilot Bryan Wagner and F&S Suzuki's Brandon Nichols followed Sipes off the line in the first moto. Hardin County Motosports Yamaha's Nicholas Wolfe moved into second place on the first lap, in front of Wagner, Nichols, and Jared Karshner, on a Ben's Performance Center Yamaha. Wolfe held on to second for the rest of the moto, and Nichols and Karshner got by Wagner for the final running order. n e _ !IS Wagner and Wolfe followed Sipes into the first turn in the second moto. Wolfe and Nichols both passed Wagner on the first lap, with Karshner in fifth place. The top four stayed the same, and KTM rider Steve Banet moved up to fifth place after Karshner crashed hard on the step-up jump returning from the woods section and did not finish. Sipes took the overall, in front of Wolfe, followed by Nichols, Wagner and Banet. Dreyer Suzuki's Jeff Jennings took the holeshot in the first 125cc B moto, in front of Will Busick, on an Indy Cycle Yamaha, and Sipes. On the first lap, Sipes moved into the lead, followed closely by Jennings. Busick held third place, in front of Jon Wells, on a Cycle Specialties Kawasaki, and Wolfe. Chris Couch moved into fourth on the second lap, in front of Wolfe, and took third on the next lap. Wolfe moved up to fourth, and Adam Smith finished fifth on a Sloans Yamaha. Jennings nailed the holeshot again in the second moto, in front of Sipes. Again Sipes took the lead on the first lap, with Jennings a close second, in front of Smith, Couch and Wolfe. Jennings blew an engine on the next lap and Wolfe moved up to second place, in front of Couch, Smith and Wagner. Smith moved into third, in front of Wagner and Michael Akaydin, on a Scott Hall Racing Kawasaki.
