SANDERSON ENGUSHTOWN, NJ, APR. 14 romley Suzuki's Veteran Prof Expert rider, Barry Carsten competed in the EA Sports Supercross Series in Pontiac Michigan on Saturday night, finishing 14th in the quarter-liter class, and then drove all night so he wouldn't miss round two of the Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic at his home track. Carsten used consistency to win the overall in the supercompetitive 125cc Pro/Expert class, finishing 2-2, ahead of RRP's Damien Plotts and Fast By Ferracci/Husqvarna's Steve Mertens. Plotts won the first moto and finished third in the second to secure the runner-up spot on the podium, while Mertens finished fourth and first to round out the podium. Carsten also dominated the Vet Expert class, riding to a perfect 1-1 score for the overall, ahead of James Kapitan (2-2) and Jerry Seip Jr. (4-3). Plotts topped the 250cc Open Pro/Expert podium via a perfect 1-1 score. Carsten (2-2) was second overall, and Ryan Tuerck (3-3) was third overall. Brian Murphy topped the extremely fast and competitive Schoolboy class with his 4-1 score. Second overall went to Stephen Hunter (5-2). David Sterritt (7 -3) was third. Plotts led the pack out of the first turn in the first 125cc Pro/Expert moto, followed by Carsten, Ty Wallace, Lee Rostein Jr. and Richard Zupco. The top five remained unchanged until lap five, when Mike Veracka finally caught and passed Zupco for fifth. Carsten was closing the gap on Plotts after 5 1/2 of seven laps. Wallace was 12 seconds off the leaders' pace in third; Rostein was fourth, while Mertens passed Veracka for fifth. Carsten closed the gap on Plotts to a bike length by the last lap, and when the two came to the huge infield double with half a lap to go, a tapper got in Plotts' way and he couldn't double while Carsten could, allowing Carsten to make the pass in the following corner. However, Carsten came into the turn too hot and his Suzuki swapped and highsided and Carsten went down, ensuring Plotts of the first-moto win. Wallace, Mertens and Veracka followed. Yamaha pilot Greg Pamart led the pack off the long, sandy start of the second moto, but he was quickly relegated to second by Husky rider Mertens. Rounding out the top five were Tuerck, Wallace and Plotts. Mertens kept pulling away, and he had a six-second advantage by the end of lap two. Wallace passed Pamart for second. Plotts was up to fourth, and Tuerck dropped to fifth. By lap four, Mertens was still in the point, while Plotts dropped his RRP teammate Wallace to third. Carsten was now up to fourth after tripling two sections of the front rhythm sections to pass Pamart and Tuerck. Plotts tried in vain to catch Mertens by the last lap, but in the process he didn't see the hard-charging Carsten, who passed Plotts for second just before the white flag waved. Plotts was relegated to third. Mertens took the checkers with a five-second lead. Carsten had the lead after half a lap. Rounding out the top five were Donald Dicillo Jr., Kapitan, Harper and Dave Wolfskill. After three laps, Carsten's lead was 10 seconds, ahead of Kapitan, now in second. Dicillo dropped to third, Jim Mcilvaine was now fourth, with Wolfskill fifth. Carsten had a whopping 13-second lead by moto's end. Kapitan finished second, Mcilvaine third, Seip fourth and Wolfskill fifth. Carsten led the pack from wire to wire in the second moto, trailed by Kapitan, Seip, Dicillo and Mcilvaine. The top five spread out quickly and didn't change until late in the moto. Carsten had an 8 1/2-second lead by the last lap. Kapitan and Seip remained second and third, while Dicillo and Mcilvaine battled back and forth, with Dicillo topping Mcilvaine in the end. The second moto officially finished as Carsten, Kapitan, Seip, Dicillo and Mcilvaine. Jacob Morrison nailed the holeshot in the first Schoolboy moto, trailed by Jay Weller, Jason Lawrence, Murphy and Hunter. On lap two, Lawrence passed Morrison and Weller for the lead. Morrison finished second, with Weller third. Murphy and Hunter remained fourth and fifth. Morrison nailed another holeshot in the second moto, followed by Murphy and Scott Jordan Edelste. A major third-turn pileup put half of the 26-rider field on the ground.
