ATKOp-=-S The Bailey Boys Come Home Lake Sugar Tree recently welcomed back former track owner and motocross legend David Bailey to the place where his racing career began in the early '80s. It had been Il years since the 40-year-old Bailey was last on the track at Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports Park in Axton, Virginia. The homecoming came because Bailey was there to teach a twoday motocross school with his father Gary. David Bailey owned the Lake Sugar Tree facility until 1992, when he sold it to his uncle, Bob Bailey. This year, Lake Sugar Tree will host four AMA events, with the first one slated for May 19. For more information on the racetrack, see their Web site at www.lake- _ While the Supercross boys were doing their thing at the Salt Lake round, American motorcycle manufacturer ATK, which hails out of nearby Centerville, Utah, was chatting up a group of law enforcement officers. ATK, which is releasing a police motard modeJ, hosted a special law enforcement seminar. The two-day meeting provided the opportunity to test and evaluate the bike and to introduce police officials to a variety of aftermarket products aimed at busting bad guys. sugartree.com. By ALAN CATHCART - • Maico's Still Kicking One of Germany's oldest motorcycle manufacturers, founded by the Maisch family In 1926, Maico was for many years the country's leading off-road marque, with a proud championship-winning MX tradition until its decline and bankruptcy in the early 1990s. Refounded in October 1995 by the Dutch-based engineering company Rodem, Mako was revitalized with a new range of 250, 350, 400 and 500cc two-stroke models launched at the 1996 Cologne Show in both enduro and motocross guise, powered by Malco's own engines and eqUipped with Marzocchi suspension and Brembo brakes. But Rodem was undercapitalized for even limited production of this new range of bikes. The following year, Rodem sold Maico Motorcycles to Dutch entrepreneur Cor Jacobs, whose Xylofoon BV holding company moved the operation to a brand-new, purpose-built factory in Venlo, stiD in Holland but right on the German border. But Jacobs too failed to revive the historic marque, and has now ceded control of the Maico brand to Leverkusen-based German wholesaler Koestler Bikeworld, which, in addition to being a major KTM distributor, has also acquired the entire stock of Dutch-built Maico bikes and parts and are marketing them worldwide via the Web as well as selected dealers in Germany. Koestler's Web site www.koestler-bikeworld.de lists the large 2002 Maico range of 14 different twostroke models which are available, ranging from the 250cc Cross retailing worldwide for about $5200 up to the top of the range 620 Supermoto Racing ($7700), with a 685cc racekit option. Built to provide a two-stroke alternative in the Supermoto race category now sweeping Europe, as well as a suitable powerplant for Sidecar MX, this has a liquid-cooled, 685cc, reed-valve engine with fivespeed transmission and hydrllUlic clutch, developed by Maico R&D engineer Hermann Walgenbach to produce a claimed 76 bhp at 7000 rpm in a package weighing just 248 pounds dry. Maico production is already restarted on a hand-built basis, and if Koestler gets the customer response it's looking for, it plans to restart development work on new models, still retaining the two-stroke engine format.
