Said series will consist of two international rounds in December, plus the 16 rounds of the 2003 American series. F1M MX chairman Wolfgang Srb met with Clear Channel Motor Sports president Charlie Mancuso and Roy Janson (among others), after which Janson revealed that the target dates are December 7 and 14 (sites won't be revealed until mid-June, though word has it Amsterdam and Cardiff are at the top of the list). "The format will be the same as here," Janson said. "Everything's the same. We'll use the same rules; we'll even use the same start gate." Despite the fact that many American racers contest European events in the off-season anyway, many are less than enthusiastic about the two added rounds. Many feel that the international rounds were added In an (successful) attempt to pressure the AMA into rejoining the Clear Channel series, and the teams - whose bonuses would be necessary to guarantee a strong turnout of top riders - don't like the idea of traveling to Europe at a time when they're usually scrambling to prepare for the Anaheim U.S. opener, The manufacturers recently met in Japan with representatives from the AMA and the F1M to discuss the issue, and Janson said that one company has made a verbal commitment to participate in the events, It was difficult to tell through speaking with the Big Four team managers which manufacturer that might be. "I don't know our test schedule yet, but I don't think our people are for it," said SoSe Suzuki manager Roger DeCoster. "We're already so busy at that time, and we can't even get a week off before the motocross series." "It's a little too early to say," said Yamaha manager Steve Butler. "(Participation} seems doubtful, just because of the timing, with the holidays and everything. That's right around the time that we're getting our parts for the '03s." "Until we hear from upper management that it's important to them, I don't know that it makes sense," Honda manager Erik Kehoe said_ "We'd be happy with two less races, and now we're getting two mllre. We're glad that the AMA and Clear Channel got together, but we'll have to see about this." "We're the U.S. motocross team," understated Chevy Trucks Kawasaki manager Bruce Stjemstrom. Clear Channel obviously knows it's got a difficult task ahead of itself in convincing team participation in the two rounds, but its representatives are enthusiastic at the prospect of bringing the sport to new markets. In hopes of helping to convince the manufacturers that the move is a good one, Clear Channel will pay the way for the 250cc riders, just as they do for the European Arenacross rounds. (The 125cc show will be the responsibility of the Europeans.) 5. Jeremy McGreth (Yam); 6 By CHRIS JONNUM PHOTOS BY STEVE BRUHN LAS VEGAS, NV, MAY 4 e ach year, the AMA and Clear Channel crown three different supercross champions, and although James Stewart failed to garner one in his rookie season, he proved at the season finale that he is definitely of championship caliber. Most folks have thought that since even before the Chevy Trucks Kawasaki rider competed in his first professional race, but it was nice to finally have it proven once and for all. Stewart, who basically gave away the West Region title earlier this year with decidedly un-champion-like erratic riding, dominated the best both regions had to offer, and like last week in Salt Lake City, he did so in a smooth, intelligent fashion that EastlWest 125cc Shootout winner James Stewart and runner-up Chad Reed congratulate each other after the 15-lap race. cuc .... n _ ... s MAY 15. 2002 11
