According to sources in Australia, Liam Magee, the nephew of former 500cc Grand Prix and AMA racer Kevin Magee, was killed on April 27 after a crash during qualifying for the Australian Superbike Series round at the Mallala circuit in South Australia. Liam Magee was 19 years old. The British-based Telefonica MoviStar Suzuki team has invited Prince William to attend the 2002 British Motorcycle Grand Prix at Donington Park on July 14th as its special VIP guest. The team has reacted to news that Prince William has just passed his Compulsory Basic Training and is interested in motorcycles by offering him a ringside seat with one of the most successful teams in the history of bike racing at his home Grand Prix. More recently, the team won the 2000 World Championship with American Kenny Roberts Jr, who is still riding for it alongside Spanish race-winner Sete Gibemau. In total, the team has won five riders titles and seven constructors championships. " Steve Whitelock, the FIM technical delegate for the World Superbike Championship, called on April 24 to tell us that our report from the Sugo round of the World Superbike Series that ran in last week's Cycle News (Briefly.... page 23, Issue #17) regarding him getting ousted by the FIM is untrue. "I haven't heard anything about it,· Whitelock said. "I didn't receive any letter and I don't know where it [the reportl came from. As far as I know, things are normal. I have travel plans for the next two races and I haven't heard anything that would lead me to believe that things aren't okay. I went to Sugo and did my work. Speaking of the FIM, the world sanctioning body has announced two changes to the SuperMoto World Championship schedule, with the Dutch round of the series being moved to August 2 instead of July 28. Additionally, the round scheduled for France on September 22 will now take place on the circuit of Toulouse-Muret, according to the FIM. For those who didn't know it, the FIM has a SuperMoto World Championship round scheduled for November 3 in Bakersfield. California, though the release lists the site as Bakersfield, San Diego, California. Team Muzzy has announced that Steve Johnson (not to be confused with NHRA Pro Stock Bike racer Steve Johnson) has rejoined Rob Muzzy Racing as crew chief for the Team Muzzy Drag Racing Team. He will be working with Rickey Gadson and Ryan Schnitz at the ProStar races and will also work on the Muzzy Pro Stock Motorcycle development team. According to a release issued by the team, Johnson may be the most experienced crew chief in motorcy· c1e racing, haVing worked on everything from 125cc motocross to 500cc GP and World Superbikes. The list of championship riders and varied venues he has worked with is impressive to say the least. He started his career in the '60s as a drag-racing teenager, went to work at Kawasaki in 1969, and by 1971 had won his first World Championship with the legendary Phil Read in 250cc GP From there, he was into Motocross, working with the likes of Lackey, Weinert, Semics and Ward. Back to road racing, and Steve was Eddie Lawson's mechanic in '80, '81 and '82, and Wayne Rainey's in '83. After a stint as a manager at Kerker, in 1990 Steve joined the Vance & Hines team, winning his first Daytona with Dave Sadowski as well as a 600cc Supersport Championship. " Ii U . Additional Daytona wins include those of Eddie Lawson (1993) with the Vance & Hines team, and after joining Rob Muzzy Racing, Scott Russell's wins in '94 and '95. Johnson was team manager for the Muzzy Kawasaki World Superbike team from 1994 through 1996, and won the AMA Superbike championship with Doug Chandler in 1997. He continued to manage the Muzzy team until the Muzzy/Kawasaki road racing team was disbanded in 1999. At that time, he left for North Carolina and an administrative position with the Winston Cup and Busch racing team of PPI Motorsports, where he worked with drivers Scott Pruett and Rickey Craven. The vagaries of racing found Johnson available and, after attending a couple of drag races as a guest, he decided to rejoin Muzzy in the pursuit of still more championships to add to his total of 12. Johnson says of his return to Team Muzzy: "I'm very excited about getting back into drag racing. like so many of us, drag racing was my first introduction to racing. It offers quite a challenge and I'm sure will call on all my skills as a manager and tuner." AMA Pro Racing has sent out a second reminder telling their racers that new AMA Pro Racing logos must be in place on their bikes and leathers by the May 30-June 2 round at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colorado. AMA Pro Racing, meanwhile, still hasn't sent out any press releases regarding the appeal-board meeting to decide the fate of Damon Buckmaster's Yamaha R7 /R 1 Formula Xtreme bike, nor was there ever a press release regarding the illegal modifications done to Ben Spies' Attack Suzuki that led to him losing his points from the California Speedway round of the Superstock Championship. There is, however, a reminder in the latest bulletin "that, in addition to the original limit of 65 rider entries per class, pre-entries will be accepted only from riders that currently have points or were in the top 20 from the 2001 season in the same class or classes that they wish to enter at laguna Seca. Pre-entries will be accepted until June 14 and no post entries will be taken at the event. - Pier-Francesco Chili is quickly recovering following surgery to repair the broken left collarbone he suffered in his Kyalami crash in round two of the World Superbike Championship.
