CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series Round 1: Albany Motorsports Park - STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT ALBAl'IY, OR, APR. 7 I fter wrestling with diffkulties at the final two rounds of the CMC Northwest Winter Motocross Series, KTM rider Pete Sannan appeared to be freshly rejuvenated with both the change of seasons and a change in series at Albany Motorsports Park. Sannan scored dominating 125cc and Before The Hill Intermediate-class victories at the opener of the 12-round CMC Northwest Spring/ Summer Motocross Series. Sannan, one of the most dominant riders throughout the 10 rounds of the CMC Winter Arenacross Series, posted midpack performances at the final two rounds of that series (which was run outdoors at Albany). However, on this day the 15-year-old from hometown boy bested competitive fields of riders in both classes. Ryan Thompson and two other top southem Oregon riders on hand, Brian and Tyler Mockridge, couldn't put the stops to Sannan, although Thompson did score a win in the first Before The Hill Intermediate-class moto. Thompson darted to the front of the combined Before the Hill/Up the Hill and Open Amateur class contestants at the unleashing of moto one, and the 17 -year-old Honda rider would retain the position to the finish to score a win in the competitive Before the Hill Intermediate class, followed by Sannan and the top-placing Open Amateur rider, Ed Smith. Thompson would lead the majority of moto two, but Sannan took the lead on the seventh and final circuit to grab the lead and, more importantly, salvage an overall Before The Hill Intermediate-class win. Sannan (2-1), 36 MAY 8, 2002' II: U II: I e KTM rider Pete Sannan won three of four motos contested at Albany Motonports Part<, site of round one of the 12-round CIIC Northwes1 Spring/Summer Motocross Seri. ., winning the 125cc mKI Before The Hili III1ItnnecIIlIte ~ overall. Thompson (1-2) and Jensen (4-3) filled the top three overall. Smith, who trailed only Sannan and Thompson at the finish, scored an overall Open Amateur-class win with a 1-1 tally, ahead of Devin Adams (2-2) and Travis Roberts (3-3). Honda rider Nick Randklev appears to be back on track after missing much of the Arenacross series. Randklev was the top performer in the Before The Hill Junior class, scoring convincing wins while running amid the Intermediate-class contestants. Trailing Ranclklev in the overall column were Justin Rice, a relatively newcomer to the class after having dominated the Beginner class, and the third-place finisher, David Sparks. Randklev was also successful in the 125cc Junior class. Randklev won both motos in the class (finalizing his perfect four-for-four sweep on the day) to lead Yamaha riders Nicholas Nowak and Ricky Yorks in the two motos, respectively. Nowak got the best of Yorks in moto two to snare second overall, while Yorks (2-3), Rice (4-4) and Kyle Adkins (5-5) rounded out the top five. Women's Motocross League's Rochelle Neimann proved that she can stick with the guys and finised slightly behind Adkins in both motos to finish the day in sixth. Smith, who earlier had won the Open Amateur class overall, came back to face equally tough competin __ s tors in the combined Over 30 Pro/Intermediate classes. Smith, riding a Yamaha YZF426, had Honda rider David Germain to contend with in both motos; his best performance came in moto two. Germain, best known as a top performer in the AHRMA Vintage National Series, grabbed the lead on the opening lap, but Smith fired right back at Germain 1 to take a lead he'd maintain to the end. Germain finished second to Smith for a win in the Over 30 Pro class (Smith is an Expert-class contestant), while Jamie Claassen, Rick Walling and Jason Smith followed. Jason Smith, riding a KTM, trailed Ed Smith at the finish in moto one, but Jason Smith couldn't match such a performance the second time out and finished fourth. This greatly aided in Germain's Pro-class overall win, as Germain encountered problems in moto one and went 3-1 on the day. Walling (2-3) and Claassen (7-2) filled the second and third positions in the Pro portion. In the adjoined Intermediate class, Yamaha rider Ken Romero grabbed an overall win by acing both motos. Thompson was also in position to snare a win in the first combined 125/250cc Pro and 125cc Intermediate moto, but the rider from Bandon, Oregon, would only hold the point position for three laps. After that, Yamaha-mounted Ryan Leach, the lone 250cc Pro rider in the field, took command. Leach held it to the finish, while Sannan, who ran a soHd second throughout the moto, trailed the seasoned Pro. Thompson finished third, slight ahead of the lone 125cc Pro rider, Washington's J.R. Vie lie, with Brian Mockridge, Husqvarna rider Justin Jensen, and Tyler Mockridge trailing. Moto two saw Leach in command from the get-go; this time around, Leach wasted little time decimating the competition. Thompson ran second for much of the race before yielding to Sannan in what was a battle for the overall 125cc Intermediate-class win - which would ultimately go Sannan's way. Vielle would again net fourth, followed by 23-year-old Brian Mockridge, the third-place finisher overall in the 125cc Intermediate class, and Jensen, the 250cc Intermediate-class winner.
