Pro Stock champ Todd Doege took a pair of wins against rivals Paul Gast and Billy You. Doege ran as quick as 7.093 at 195.68 mph. Schnitz and Hunter made the Atlanta final and Hunter did everything he needed on the tree, cutting a near-perfect 0.404 light which gave him an almost tenth and a half advantage off the line. Still, it was not enough, as Schnitz motored to a 9.69/138 to take his second win. When the Hot Rod Cruiser class debuted last season, the performance potential of the bikes was unknown. The II-second barrier was threatened until Jon Cornell broke it mid-season. It took Rick McWaters just two events into the 2002 season to crack into the nines. McWaters, riding a Harley Davidson, began his assault on the barrier, qualifying for Gainesville with a 10.14 at 128.95 mph. He lowered the mark to a 10.13 in his final-round victory over teammate Terry Reed, also on a Harley. McWaters qualified number one for the Atlanta event, running a 10.23 to edge out Mark Underwood on the Patrick Racing Yamaha. In the first round of eliminations, McWaters lowered the boom, setting the performance mark with a 9.991 to take out former ProStar Pro Stock Champion Fred Collis. After a series of 10.0second runs in eliminations, McWaters backed up the mark with a 10.004 at 132 mph in his final-round victory again against Reed.
