AHRMA ACR Vintage Series Round 1: Budds Creek Motocross Park Grand Obsolescence Path Valley Speedway: Raun Wood (BBA) leads Jared Mees (20), Ricky Winsett (26) and the rest of the pack in the Sportsman contest at the season opener in Spring Run, Pennsylvania. The top three finished in that order. overall win, which went to Mellinger, riding in the Over 30. Winsett topped the Over 40 class. In another combined class race, Robert Jones gradually worked his way by Joe Dohm on his way to the 600cc B win, while Dohm won the 500cc class. Wayne Wagner took the 125cc final. Roy Miller led Mees, John Lewis, Wood and Mellinger off the 250cc A start, but by the third lap, Mees was in the lead, but Lewis and Wood put their noses in front at various times. Then Mellinger fell in the first turn and was hit by another rider; he was admitted to the hospital, where it was discovered he had fractured his neck vertebrae, putting him out for the season. When the 250cc A contest finally got rolling again, Mees led Wood, with Miller battling Don Mullen and Ken Yoder for third. Entering the third turn for the last time, Wood dived under Mees and into the lead, but he couldn't hold his line, and Mees retook it off four for the win. After having a bad day, resultswise, at last week's opener, Austin Greenland returned with a vengeance at Path Valley. He thoroughly dominated the 65cc final and did likewise to the 85cc (7-11) group on his Greenland [, Sons Masonry/Mom [, Dad-sponsored machines. In the 85cc contest, a close battle was waged the entire distance between Brandon Robinson, James Rispoli and Matthew Weidman for second, and it wasn't decided until Robinson fell in the final turn. eN PBth Velley Speedwey Spring Run, Pennsylvenia Results: Mercb 3D, 2DD2 50 OIL·INJ: J. Tyler Budds Creek Motocross Park: Chris Huhn of Ashburn, Virginia, aboard an 'B3 Honda CR250, was the Ultima-class winner at the opening round of the AHRMA ACR Vintage Series in Budds Creek, Maryland. By RAE TYSON BODDS CREEK, MD, APR. 6 O n a famous motocross track normally dominated by modern Japanese bikes, it was quite a contrast. Then again, the Eastern Vintage Reunion was all about contra5ts. Check out the lineup: Maico, Hodaka, BSA, Ducati, AJS, Can-Am, Husqvarna, Montesa, Bultaco and Cl. Can you spell o-b-s-o-I-e-t-e? Not to be outdone, some stellar examples of Japan's earliest motocross bikes were in the hunt as well. Darin Emswiler, an Expert rider from Hagerstown, Maryland, managed a pair of wins aboard his vintage, 1970s-era Honda CRs. In the Pre-1978 class, he battled with James Way of Enola, Pennsylvania, on a Montesa. In both motos of the Pre-1975 125cc class, Emswiler engaged in a close battle with Tom France of Haverstraw, New York, on a four-stroke, Honda-powered Husqvarna. Would that be a "Husda" or "Honvarna"? "I kept him in sight but didn't have enough to really challenge him," said France. In the highly competitive Pre-1975 B class, Robert Whitworth Jr. of Andover, New Jersey, got the firstmota win aboard a 125cc CR, followed closely by Scott Nicholas of Berkasie, Pennsylvania, on a Kawasaki. The pair battled throughout the contest, ultimately swapping places in the second mota. The overall win went to Nicholas. Steve Tucker, a veteran Vintage rider, came all the way from Ormstown, Quebec, to snare a pair of wins on a 1960s-era BSA. Russell Polanis made the long trek from New Port Ritc;hie, Florida, for a double victory aboard a Suzuki TM. Other double winners included Kenneth Napolitano of Stormville, New York; Peter Tyson of Clifton, Vir- cycle ginia; and David Murphy from Lima, New York. On a day that was cool but sunny, Jonathan Beasley's track was in superb shape. And the vintage riders responded accordingly, putting on a quite a show for the hearty group of spectators. The event was cosponsored by American Classic Racing and the American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association (AHRMA).
