This race doubled as an area qualifier for Loretta Lynn's. This event, which is continuing to grow, has all the ingredients of what a state championship race should be. CN lInII's Rid.. Kevin Walker, from nearby Virginia, earned three state titles in the strong Pro class. "If you pay them, they will come.' This statement held true, as Pro entries were 37 strong in the 125cc division and 38 strong in 25Os. In the first 125cc moto, Walker nailed the holeshot aboard a YZ250F and set the pace, with Jim Neese, Hans Neel, Nick Bums and Nike Veracka following. Neese made contact with an outside fencepost and hit the ground hard on the first lap. This allowed Aaron Day to move into the top five. Local favorite Mark Wagner was now in sixth and putting pressure on Day. Neel was keeping Walker in sight. Day made a move on Veracka to take over fourth. This set up the finish; Walker took the win, followed by Neel, Bums, Day and Veracka. In moto two, Walker and Neese were again out front, but this time Neese avoided the fencepost and was able to finish in second. Tom Welch, always a favorite at this race, showed up in third. Neel and Veracka rounded out the top five. Once again, 250cc action was unpredictable. Burns had the quick hand and led from the start. Veracka was second, followed by Danny Smith, Wagner, and then Walker. B lap three, Walker had moved into third. Veracka went down, giving Walker an open shot at Burns. With only one lap remaining, he couldn't do more than close the gap, giving Burns the win, with Walker, Smith, Kevin Brodsky and Day in tow. The second moto was less suspenseful, as Walker took the point early. Jim Chester and Welch were running a close second and third. Burns was fourth, and Troy Crisp finally found the top five. With jumbled scores, the top five overall were 82 MAy 1. 2002' c u e • • posted as Walker, Bums, Welch, Day and Brodsky. Walker returned to take the Over 30 A title, and Neese was crowned champ in the Over 25 A class. Scott Shipley was the man in Over 35 and 40 action, as he earned two state titles. Sam Dayton kept him honest in the Over 40 contest, and the two came together on the last lap of moto two. Shipley remounted and took the win and the overall. Darrell Bell was the Over 45 champion, as consistent scores earned him the title. Maryland's Chad Wages joined the Schoolboy ranks at a disadvantage: He was one of only three who were competing on 80s in the premier 125cc class. However, when the gate dropped, he was the man with the holeshot and the one setting the pace. Much to the frustration of Jeremy Jacobs and Ryan Fitzwater, every shot they took at Wages didn't work. Jake Allen and Edwin Anderson were the next pair, in fourth and fifth. Wages was not intimidated, and he took the moto win ahead of these guys. Moto two was Ryan's brother Samuel's chance to shine, as he took the lead early and stayed just ahead of Wages to secure the win. But Wages won the war via his 1-2 score, which earned him the state title. With this race being so big, not many riders from North Carolina get a chance to win their home-state title, but Kyle Clark from Shelby beat the odds by winning the title in the 125cc C division. The top five overall were Clark, Jake Allen, Chevis King, David Growe and Kaulo Anderson. Another local, Broc Tickle, left Sanford with two state titles to take back home to Cary. His change to Hondas this year must be working, as he won the 85cc (9-13) and 85cc (12-13) classes. Also, North Carolina's Cooper n __ s 50 SHAFT: J. Cooper Webb (Yom); 2. Jeff Burgess (Yam); 3. Path Valley Sf Season Opener Path Valley Speedway Wood vs. Mees Round II BY LEN BREECH SPRING RUN, PA. J\'IAR. 30 our riders emerged from the 140 entered at the Path Valley Short Track opener with two class wins apiece as Two Wheel Promotions opened their 2002 motorcycle program at Path Valley Speedway. After having three closely fought races last week at Trail-Way Speedway, Jared Mees and Raun Wood again had three closely fought races on this night; this time Mees emerged with two wins, in the 250cc A and 600cc A classes, while Wood was the benefactor of Mees' flat rear tire in the Sportsman final. Also doubling were Kyle Schlimme, in the 50cc (4-6) and 50cc Oil-Injected classes; Austin Greenland, in the 85cc (7 -11) and 65cc finals; and Jonathan Jordan, in the 85cc (12-15) and 250cc B classes. The easiest of those wins was the in crowded 600cc A final. Mees put his Moroney's H-D/l-800 FASTHOG/Michael H-D Classics/ John Masonry/Axo-sponsored Rotax in front of Phil Libhart, Bryan Douglas and Ricky Winsett. After a slow start, F Wood was into second by the end of the second lap, with Winsett third. By halfway, the top three had a 10-yard cushion over each other, with the only battle between Libhart. Brian Phillips and Shawn Baer for fourth, which went to Libhart. Wood got a better start in the Sportsman contest, leading Winsett, Mees, Bryan Douglas and Shawn Baer out of turn two. By the second lap, Mees had leapfrogged his way into the lead, and it looked like he was going to win the "replay' of the 600cc A final. "I could feel it [the rear tirel starting to go down just past halfway," Mees recounted, "and I was hoping to nurse it home, but just before the start of the last lap, it really got bad. I was just lucky to finish.' With Mees' tire going down, Wood got his Scott PowerSports-sponsored Rotax by on the final lap, but Mees was able to limp across in second, several yards in front of Winsett. While they were in different classes, Rich Mellinger and John Winsett Sr. battled hot and heavy for the
