The 38-year-old Harrell, from Visalia, California, did go on to take the win, with Spencer second and Herman third. "Rod is always real tough, and I knew we were going to have a good battle going," Harrell said. "I think that it is going to be a lot of fun all season riding against him." Reigning Novice 250cc Champion Chris Canepa had a tough row on his hands in the eight-lap Suzuki-backed A main event, as title contender David Brown, the youngster who finished second to Canepa in the 2001 final series standings, came prepared to fight for the win. Brown nabbed the holeshot to lead the 12-rider field through the half-mile first turn, but as they slowed for the infield, Canepa darted to the inside and assumed the lead position. From there, Canepa was able to hold off Brown by getting superior drives off the tight left-hand corner that transitioned the riders from the infield back onto the halfmile in speedway turn three. Canepa went on to win by several lengths at the finish, even though Brown was always able to keep him honest by closing up in the infield section on every lap. "The track was real dusty and slick, so throttle control was the key," Canepa said. "I got a good start and just tried to stay smooth to keep the wheels from spinning. I was clicking to third over the jump to avoid the ruts. If you went over in second, you couldn't clear 'em. I heard David back there the last few laps. I started getting tired, and I guess I settled back a little too much." Brown finished second, followed by Bradley Spencer. Josh Ritchie was fourth, coming through the pack from the penalty line after jumping the start.
