Tony Amaradio (71) led most of the second moto, only for Dubach to catch and pass him in the closing stages. Here, he's being sized up by Hamblin (99) and Paul Carpenter (hidden) in the first moto. Big lead: Chris Gosselaar won the 50cc Pro Challenge and dominated most of the 150cc Pro Challenge (pictured) as well, only to be DQ'd from the 150cc race after somebody helped him push his dead bike across the finish in the second moto. moto. However, it would soon all go south from there for the likable rider. Walters fell while running second and hit his already-tender ankle, a mistake that prevented him from being a factor in the moto, or the championship. Sellards was chasing Amaradio after that, but you could tell he was feeling the effects of his illness, and he soon fell prey to Dubach, who was on the move. Amaradio had a good eight seconds in hand by the time Dubach got into second, but there was plenty of time left, and it seemed like both Dubach and Arnaradio knew it. Hamblin, who was 24th as he finished the first lap, was ninth as they completed lap four. At the same time, King was pressuring Sellards for third, while Dubach started closing on Amaradio for the lead. With three laps to go, Amaradio started making mistakes and, like a shark, Dubach seemed to smell blood and quickly moved in for the kill. Dubach made his move on the second-to-Iast lap, and, although Amaradio tried extremely hard to regain the lead, Dubach wouldn't have it. Dubach went on to win the moto and, miraculously, the overall, followed closely by Amaradio. In third, quite a ways back, was King, who had about five seconds on Sellards in fourth. In a ride that can be called nothing short of amazing, Hamblin caught and passed first-moto winner Walters for fifth with two laps to go, and he finished there - too far behind Sellards to make a fight of it. "I had fire in my eyes, I guess," said Hamblin, who had to be the fastest guy in the second moto. "I just went from last to fifth, I guess - on the gas." "I just ran out of steam," said third-place finisher (via 1-6 motos) Walters. "I'm pretty disappointed because I think it should've been mine today, but those guys rode great. My hat's off to them, for sure." "Next year, j'lI have to come out here with a little more practice, because these old guys kept beating up on me," said a very sick Sellards after his second-place overall finish The first Open Pro moto gets under way with Walters (80) leading Amaradio (71), Sellards (18), Carpenter (42), Terry Fowler (T2), Dubach (2) and, buried In the pack, Hamblin (99). Also burled In the pack was 'YZ250F-mounted Josh Demuth (81). (via 2-4 motos). "You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but he can teach you some." "I felt pretty good after that first moto," said Dubach, who took the lion's share of the $6000 purse, "but 1 was a little down just because I had high hopes of winning. But things had to fall my way, and they did, so ... You know, what can I say?" eN Whill! lInIthen Four-stnllle World Championships &Ien Helen Race• ., Resufts:lpriI13-14,2002 Saturday 50 KIDS: I.
