Districts 6and 7Season Opener Trail-Way Speedway Wood Wallops the Experts By LEN BREECH HANOVER, PA, MAR. 24 eading more than three-quarters of the finals he was entered in, Raun Wood came away with a pair of wins in the Open Single A and Sportsman classes on his Scott Powersports-sponsored Rotax at an event that served as the debut of Trail-Way Speedway's "new look," and also as the snow-delayed opening outdoor short track in the midAtlantic area. During the off season, Trail-Way Speedway received the most ambitious upgrading in the track's history. The installation of a foot-thick, 5-feet-above-track-surface concrete retaining wall completely around the track widened the straights by close to 10feet, with the turns also increased by a few feet. Due to snow and rain, the opening event at Shippensburg Speedway had been aborted, but on this day the weather was just overcast, and riders from as far as New York and Virgirua came to the event. In fact, Virginia's Tim Eades topped Roy Miller and Shawn Baer in the Open Twin A final - a battle in which Pro riders were looking for some seat time before the Nationals start - and New York's Matt Weidman topped the 85cc (7-11) final. L 62 APRIL 24, 2002' cue I e Setting a pattern for the day, Wood was first out of two in the Open Single A contest, with Don Mullen, Jared Mees and Daytona winner Ricky Winsett Jr. following. Mees fought past Mullen on the second lap off two for the runner-up spot, with Winsett taking third by the end of the lap. Mees worked his way up to Wood within a lap, trying to pressure him, but Wood managed to get a better drive off the turns on his 500, while Mees' 600 just spun on the hard-packed surface. At the end, Wood held a 10-yard margin, with Winsett a lonely third about 15 yards from anyone. The Sportsman final was almost identical, except Bryan Douglas was in fourth, in front of Winsett, who was riding his older machine at this event and drifted backward. Mees took second at the start of the third lap and tried to keep the power a little more under control. On the sixth lap, he tried to go under Wood in the third turn but came up short. Once alerted, Wood again pulled slightly ahead for the win. In the 250cc A final, Wood again led the field, with John Lewis V, in his fjrst start as an A rider, getting a good start in second. Shawn Baer and Mees followed. Mees took second down the back straight on the second lap, and pressured Wood for the lead. After a slow start, Rich Mellinger took third on the fourth lap. Jim Hollister was the first Over 30 rider out of the second turn, followed by class rookie Rich Mellinger, Damian Kocovinos and Lowell Wherley. While Hollister is a crafty veteran, he is still "riding himself into shape" during the beginning of the year. Mellinger had his two-stroke Honda screaming as he passed Hollister's Rotax down the back straight on the fourth lap for the lead. Before the end of the lap, Wherley had taken third. With that, the order was set, and Mellinger added to his margin in the· closing laps. The Heiser clan took two of the three classes in which they were entered. Cassidy easily won the 50cc Oil-Injected contest, and his stepbrother Travis Sennett won a hardfought battle in the 500cc Two-Valve final, fighting back from a poor start to take second from Mark Stambaugh starting the third lap. Entering the r-------------------------------------,:z: () w w a: z '" w ~ first turn on lap five, he got under Joe Dohm for the lead and the win. Riding Travis' Yamaha in the Over 40 contest, Steve Heiser lost out to the power of John Winsett Sr. 's Two Wheel Promotions/Path Valley Speedway-sponsored Rotax, as Winsett blew by early leader Doug MacDowell and Heiser halfway through the second lap and coasted to the win. Heiser took second just after Winsett's pass. Matt Weidman led Brett Pugh, James Rispoli, Ken Lamberti and Austin Greenland off the start of the 85cc (7-11) final. After another terrible start (by his standards), Greenland began to move through the field, taking fourth on the third lap and using the outside to get by Rispoli at the end of the seventh lap. Coming off the final turn, he managed to slip past Pugh for the runner-up spot. Other winners included Matthew Young in the 125cc class, Jonathan Jordan in the 250cc B class, and Tom Norton in the 600cc B class. R.J. Hart IV took the 85cc (12-15) win. By BRIAN CATTERSON PERRIS, CA, FEB. 24 You were nowhere if you weren't showing "big hair" at round two of the Southwest Vintage Racing Group's 2002 series at Perris Raceway - literally, in that a ponytailed girl and a guy whose hairstyle is as much a throwback to another time as his bikes are did their share of the winning; and figuratively, in that it took huevos grandes to tame the jump-infested track on bikes with as little as four inches of suspension travel. As always, race day started off with the half-hour Ironman moto, and Ed Tashjian wasted no time in asserting his supremacy. Trail-Way SpeedwaY" John Lewis V (21), Jared Moos (20) and Rich Mellinger (86) battle it out In the Z50cc A class at the season opener in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Moos won, Mellinger was third and Lewis was fifth. n e _ s Between the big air Tashjian was getting on his 1982 SUluki RM250 and the big hair whip- ping out the back of his helmet, it looked more like an 180s supercross than a vintage motocross - which is ironic, considering that
