Piaggio Continues to Invest
Though cash-strapped at home in Italy thanks to huge number of unsold 50cc
scooters cluttering its warehouses. P1aggio has continued to invest in its growing
Asian operation. with a $40 million buyout of the minority stake in Pillggio Greaves
Vehicles. its indian-market joint venture manufacturing the Ape three-wheeler light
tnack, in which it previously held a 51-percent majority shareholding. in partnership
with the IocaI Oruves company. Piaggio intends to double production this year to
50,000 units, as well as to restart small motorcycle and scooter production in the
sUb-c:ontineat, with 30.000 examples of Its l5Occ- and l8Occ-modellineup scheduled to be manufadured there in 2002.
