It seems like it's much, much better the whole race." McGrath was over 11 seconds in front of Yuillemin, Roncada, and Fonseca. Lusk was another 12 seconds behind, with Tortelli next, three seconds later, followed by Wey, who was half a second in front of Lewis. eN end was Carmichael. The champion was on the boil and closing, and Ramsey knew it. He knew that he had to get through the whoops cleanly, but he also knew he had to keep up the pace. Ramsey bobbled in the whoops, then made a defensive move to save his win. "I was like, 'Uh-oh, I better duck inside,' because I could hear Ricky coming," he said. "I ducked inside, and after that it's really hard to pass somebody unless you make a big mistake, and I just cruised home from there. There definitely was some gifts handed to me out there, and I'll take them. If they want to hand them to me next week, I'll take them." Carmichael was also grateful for the largesse of his peers. "We got a couple of gifts given us to for sure, with everyone crashing," he said. "I definitely got some gifts given to me. Everybody crashed, pretty much, except Jeremy. The track was tough, but I know what it takes to go 16 races - you have to be calm. I think those guys were getting too anxious. Except for my second-lap crash, me and Jeremy, we kind of just let everyone make mistakes, and we caught up to the pack." As for the effects of his crash, Carmichael said, "Definitely, I'm sore. He's going to see a doctor on Monday. - Pastrana has struggled wilh his health since a flu bug forced him to pull out halfway into the Atlanta Supercross on February 23. With a weekend off in the supercross schedule, the Maryland native rested for nearly two weeks. then raced again in the March 9 Daytona Supercross. That day ended for Pastrana when he pulled off the track halfway into the main and tipped over from the exhaustion. DeCoster also said that Kevin Windham is continuing to rehabilitate the femur he broke at the Atlanta Supercross. - Kevin is riding an exercise bike; he cannot ride a race bike yet.·· DeCoster said, adding that Windham is still on target to retum at the beginning of the outdoor national season. Logan Kamow, 7, of Vermilion, Ohio. was second. with Warren Nelson, 7. of Boyne City. Michigan. third, After ending the 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross series, Boost MobilelYamaha/Troy Racing·s Chad Reed was eager to get back on his YZ250 two-stroke, -I have a test on the outdoors on Monday'-' he said. "Hopefully thafll go well. Hopefully I can ride my 250, I just want to have some time on that bike. Ifs really tough coming off the four-stroke to the two-stroke. It feels like the thing rips your arms off." Since Reed wrapped up the 125cc tille prior to Pontiac, there was speculation that he·d enter Ihe 250cc class. Instead. he went for the clean sweep of the 125cc Eastem Regionals. but came up a bit short. Overall. the Silverdome track got high marks. "The track was pretty difficult," Yamaha·s David Vuillemin said. -It was kind of hard·pack. and the turns were kind of soft. and it was kind of rutted - not rutted like il used to be in the past. but kind of sketchyrough. Thafs why there was crashing tonight. It was a tough track. very technical." Teammate Tim Ferry also thought highly of the track. ·'It was the best Pontiac rve ever seen," he said. -It seemed like it was a pretty good track. Pontiac· s a little better when ifs later in the year because the dirt·s a little wet. and it made for some pretly good racing. Thafs good. because ifs been kind of boring lately... Vuillemin wasn't willing to blame his sore shoulder for his prob· lems in the 250cc main. -The shoulder is very good," he said. ··1 felt good in praclice. I felt good in the heat race, No excuse. I just didn·t ride very good.At one point during the main. two titans of the sport - Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael - flew side-by-side over a triple jump on one of the long sides of the stadium. McGrath looked over at Carmichael, but got no response, partly because Carmichael was struggling with his vision. The bill from his helmet had come off and lodged inside his chin piece. "I thought we'd do the classic [move wherel when you jump next to someone you look over, and I iooked over and he had his visor here," McGrath said, pointing to his nose. '·1 couldn't see anything.
