Grumpy Valley MX Park Haning Hasty at Grumpy Valley By RUPERT .5""_- _ .......=......,=;..,:;- X. PEllETT TARLTON, OH, MAR. 23 Westerville's Zach Haning has had occasion to race against many fast riders whHe competing in District 11 the last few years. The KTM racer has taken off lately and has been one of the faster Intermediate pilots in the area. At this Saturday race alongside Amish farms in south-central Ohio's rural country, Haning proved he wants the wins: He sped around the lengthy, moist and meaty circuit in top form, taking the overalls in the 250cc Band 16·24 divisions. Haning was not quite so fortunate in the 125cc B class, as local hot dogs Matt Pritchard and Nick Carroll went one-two, ahead of Haning's respectable third place. Dave Horn and Buckeye Powers portsbacked Brian "Gonzo" Gonser mixed it up in the Vet classes. Gonser stormed to the Over 30 overall, ahead of Horn, in the slightly greasy conditions, but Horn came back to best Gonser and his fast-starting CR450F in the Over 25 division. Justin Weeks took it to 'em in two classes, tweaking his KX mini· machines to dominating wins in the 65cc and Mini Junior classes. Colin Davy mastered the 80ce Senior division, while Brandon Conkel scored the overall win in the 80cc Extra class. School was out, yet Schoolboy Josh Adair held class anyway, taking the 125cc (12-15) class win. He mastered the jumpy circuit aboard his Honda CR 125. Andy Sanchez stole the show in 125cc C racing, while the Brightwell brothers tore up the 50cc classes. Rick Sizemore was the king of the 250cc Beginners. storming home ahead of Honda rider Roger Hochraden. The overloaded Shaft·Drive class was "kidhandled' by Ethan Scarberry, as the fast young man from McArthur whipped up on the youngsters aboard his PW50. Results PfW 50' I. Portland Trail Riders Currie Spices Up Portland Spring Fling By BART NEWMAN PORTlAND, MI, MAR. 24 The Portland Trail Riders hosted round one of the Michigan Spring Fling Series, and riders from six states hoped to nab a share of the factory contingencies offered up by Kawasaki, Yamaha, Husqvarna and Suzuki· but Scott Currie had no intention of letting the loot leave Michigan. Currie topped the Over 40 class. The Over 40 crew were pulled around tum one by the Honda-mounted Currie, who kept the throttle pinned, leading Jim Dlabal, Phil Peyton, David Bowman and Dave Mack. Currie was riding well, and try as he might, Dlabal couldn't close the gap that Currie had opened up. Peyton was overtaken by the battle that was raging between Bowman and Mack. It took three laps, but the war between Bowman and Mack moved Bowman past Dtabal and into second, but still off of the pace of Currie, who was racing out front on autopilot. At the end of the mota, Currie won with a good-sized lead. Bowman held off Mack for the first four laps, but the moto was five laps long, and Mack made his move two turns from the finish line to grab second, moving Bowman back to third. Fourth went to DI.bal, who appeared to be riding with a hurt ieg, while Peyton rounded out the top five. o YES! Start my subscription imme- diately to Cycle News_ 1 year / 50 issues for $45.00.
