over Lyle, but the time between these two and third was almost 30 seconds! In the 250cc AlB motos, it was again Graham taking the overall, with a 1-1 sweep over second-placed Sean LeCroy on a Dalton Motorsports Honda. However, both of these riders were beaten to the finish by B-class winner Thomason and Lyle. Third place in the 250cc/Open A class went to Anderson, and fourth went to Josh Thompson. Steven Cochran edged out Jack Brooks for third in the 250cc B class, with Jonathan West taking fifth. Kentucky's Dustin Rowe won the Supermini and 85cc (12-15) contests. The Suzuki pilot had a very impressive outing in all four of his motos, remaining undefeated on the day. In 85cc (12-15) action, Gregory Roberts took second, ahead of Chad Handrop, with David Burdett edging out his brother Josh for fourth. In the Supermini class, Tennessee's Patrick Harris finished second, with Handrop in third. Roberts and Burdett rounded out the top five. Another double-moto winner on the day was Jonathan Foskey. Winning the 65cc (7-9) Stock and 65cc Modified classes despite some very tough competition from Forrest Lane and Kristian Hardy, Foskey jumped to an early points lead in the series and proved he's the one to beat in the 65cc class. David Owens of Anderson, South Carolina, proved too much for the 250cc C and Four-Stroke classes, as he swept both. Christian Gibney and Tony Patterson rounded out the podium in the Four-Stroke class. In 250cc C racing, Jason Ivey and Robert McGrew took the podium with Owens. eN OiamOAd BaclI Molllcrass Part ResKa, &eO'llia Results: Marth 24, 2002 [Round 1J 50 SHAFT: I. Kyle Russell (Yam): 2. MXWest Spring Series Round 5: Stead Raceway Vandermades, Rodgers in Stead distance ahead of the rest of the pack. They battled it out as if they were just training back home, and in the end it was Nic who was able to turn his holeshots into wins in both motos, though Nate never gave his brother any real breathing room. Russ Dyer took his Suzuki to a solid third on the day. The Vandermades have been following a steady learning curve lately, one that could soon find them among the Intermediates if their one-two finishes continue. Another 80cc Junior who could soon find himself getting the bump is Division Two winner Rodgers, who took his TM80 to the front of both Division Two motos convincingly and kept a strong pace to claim the overall on the day. He was followed home by Yamaha-mounted Mike Walker in the second spot, and Kawasaki jockey Nick Franklin in third. Rodgers is currently most recognizable by having the only Italian minicycle on the track, but his progression on the track could soon make him notable for more than just his choice of machinery. In full-sized action, Steve Marty took his CR450 to the top of the 250cc Pro class via a 1-2 posting. Kenny Lash (who was also aboard a Honda four-stroke) came back from first-moto troubles to claim second with a 5- 1 tally. Cody Killam and his Honda used a 3-3 score to claim the third-place honors. Tommy Jean took his Honda to fourth in the 250cc Pros, but the BY ROBERT BEAUPRE STEAD, !iV, MAR. 24 he fifth round of the MXWest Spring Series featured an unexpected surprise for racers and organizers alike: a light layer of fresh snow blanketing the twisty Stead, Nevada, layout in the morning hours. The people at Nevada Motocross Development (the promoters of the race) faced the task of getting the circuit adequately prepped for the first 8 a.m. practice, and they responded well enough to make for a smooth (albeit muddy) practice session. The midmorning sun helped turn the Stead course back to its prime condition, and the extra moisture made for good traction the whole day through. Those willing to deal with the threatening morning conditions were rewarded with what turned out to be a great day for racing. The always-large 80cc Junior ranks featured the usual two-division format, and the motos went off with the Vandermade brothers, Nic and Nate, and TM80-mounted Bryan Rodgers climbing to the tops of their respective divisions. The Works Racing Developmentbacked Vandermade brothers were quick to find their way to the front of Division One, and in both motos Honda-mounted Nic gained the early lead over the Yamaha of his sibling Nate. However, Nate wasted no time in attaching himself to the back of his brother, and the two pushed each other around the circuit a comfortable T a u c •• n • _ S • APRIL 17, 2002 71
