Craig Decker (87) aced the 125cc Pro contest while Scott Davis (851) won the 250cc Pro contest at the final round of the Dave Coupe Classic Series at the "E" Street Bridge track in Marysville, California. By JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS PHOTOS BY JIM ENOS MARYSVILLE, CA, MAR. 17 MA Supercross and National Outdoor regular Craig Decker aced both 125cc Pro motos en route to a healthy payout at the final round of the sixth annual Dave Coupe Classic Series, held at the "E" Street Bridge track in Marysville. Decker, piloting a pair of Mach 1 Motorsports/ Enzo/Thor/Renthal-backed Yamaha YZs, appeared to have the 250cc Pro class sewn up as well with a solid win in moto one, but a mechanical DNF while leading early in moto two ended his hopes at a sweep. There to cash in on Decker's misfortune was F&S Suzuki/O'Neal/Posey Racing/Maxxis Tires-backed Scott Davis, who always does well on the sandy track; he mustered up a solid 2-1 score to take the 250cc Pro-class win. With a Pro purse of nearly $6000 up for grabs, a large contingent of Pros from all over showed up to do battle in the big sand pit. Southem California's Decker was right in his element. "I grew up in the desert, so this kind of track is very familiar to me," said Decker. "It was a long drive up here, but Mach 1 Motorsports is one of the main sponsors and they have been helping me all year, so I came to support them." While Decker enjoyed a fairly successful outing, fellow AMA regular Billy Payne had a day he would rather forget. After a strong runner-up finish to Decker in the first 125cc Pro moto, things went downhill. While leading the first 250cc Pro moto, Payne appeared to have the victory in the bag until his Shark/Plano Honda/Pro Grip/Pro Circuit/Michelin-backed Honda came to a sudden halt on the white-flag lap. Then, in the second 125cc Pro moto, Payne took a hard fall early in the moto and decided to call it a day. "We sucked a reed on the 250, and I hurt my wrist in that fall on the 125," Payne said. "I still have supercross suspension on the bike, and I got kicked off coming over that little jump. The track got a little rough and I just mistimed it coming into the turn and took a header. I'm okay; I just wish we could have done better today." The second 250cc Pro moto proved to be the best moto of the day. With Decker out of the picture, Davis, who inherited the lead, and Modesto Yamaha/TMR/Spy rider Craig Truglio engaged in a tight battle all the way to the checkers. A heavy rain hit just prior to the start of the moto, and conditions were tough; Davis pitched his goggles early on and, struggling to see, he did all he could to keep Truglio off his back. Every time Truglio got close enough to make a move, Davis promptly scattered a blinding roost. The tactic worked, and Davis won the moto. Truglio snagged the runner-up spot with a solid 3-2 score. "My eyes hurt from the rain, and it was hard to see," said Davis. "I was rolling some of the jumps on purpose just so I could spray a little roost at him, because he was all over me." Oakley Sport/TCR/IRS/FMF/Posey Racing rider Eric McCrummen made a triumphant return in the 125cc Intermediate class, as he rode to pair of back-to-back moto wins. McCrummen, who has been off for a few months, looked as sharp as ever as he dominated the first moto from start to finish. However, Honda pilot Jarid Blevens made things interesting in moto two by absconding with the holes hot. Although McCrummen made the pass for the lead early on, Blevins stayed within striking distance and repassed McCrummen after he took an off-track excursion. However, McCrummen recovered and went on to take the win, while Blevins followed up with a solid 2-2 score for second on the day. "I've been practicing quite a bit and this is my first race back," McCrummen said. "I love the sand, and it feels good to be back on the track. My speed is good but not my endurance, so I'm just going to keep working hard." Blevins returned to the track in the Schoolboy class and had things go his way in both motos. A pair of holeshots did the trick, as he went on to ace both motos for the overall win on the day. Reno, Nevada, resident Ryan Hazen chalked up, a 3-2 tally for second overall. Also on hand - much to the delight of the older crowd - were a handful of AHRMA Post- Vinta"ge riders. Several beautifully restored Maicos, along with a CZ and a Bultaco, took to the track, and it was Maico-mounted Matt Itamura who posted the most prominent win on the day with a 1-1 score in the Grand Prix 500cc Intermediate class, over Donnie Wilson (3-2). eN "E" Street Bridge Track Marysville, Califomia Hasults: March 17, 2002 (Final Round) Pee Wee Track 50 F(T: 1.
