Spanish motorcycles will be the featured marque at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days West, marking the first time the Association has awarded the distinction to the motorcycles of an entire country, rather than a single manufacturer. The event will feature an exhibit of classic Spanish motorcycles and memorabilia, hosted by the Spanish Motorcycle Owners Group (SMOG). Bleustein, chairman and chief executive officer of Harley-Davidson Inc., has been appointed by President George W. Bush as a member of the President's Council on the 21 st Century Workforce, according to a release issued by Harley. The Council provides information and advice to the president through the secretary of labor, the Office on the 21 st Century Workforce within the Department of Labor, and other federal officials. The Office on the 21 st Century Workforce gathers and Since the FIM announced that the 2002 Motocross des Nations would be held at Southern California's Competition Park this Sep· tember, our office has been bombarded by calls from incredulous readers wanting to know if the news was accurate (the fact that it came just before April 1 didn't help matters). Doma had done such a good job of flying below the radar that we were as shocked as most people, though we were tipped off by an alert reader just a couple of days before the official press announcement came. Curious, we put Racer X Illustrated editor and Cycle News contributor Eric Johnson on the job, and he immediately headed out to San Jacinto to check out the facility for himself and speak with track boss Malcolm McCassy Sr. and his partner, Jim Facciuto. Performing his usual thorough work, Johnson turned in a story jampacked with information, but it was so complete that we couldn't cram it into this week's issue. Instead, we'll give it the space it deserves next week, though readers looking for a sneak preview can check out excerpts on the Racer X Web site at www.racerxill.com. In the meantime, we'll hit a few of the high points here: ° The race will be held at a new facility on SoOOba Indian Reservation land in San Jacinto, California. Competition Park is currently being relocated to that facility and is set to open on June 1. Six tracks are planned for the facility. ° The MXdN track, or the "International Track: as it will be called, will be built when McCassy receives specific infonnation from the AM. and he says he will not ·over-sell" the event. ° McCassy says that he does not intend to build a supercross·oriented track, though he did say that the circuit - expected to be around one mile In length at its completion - will not feature much elevation change. ° Doma officials did visit the facility before awarding the event to Competition Park. ° McCassy hopes to host a motocross grand prix for several years after the MXdN. ° McCassy is planning a press conference for later this month. 0 0 0 0 a ~ 0 ~ 0 0 0 ~ '! g ~ Malcolm McCassy Jr. petQ, Malcolm McCassy Sr. (middle) and Jim Faccluto dlaplay plans tor the relocated Competition Partl, where the 2002 Motocro.. d. .
