ST. LOUIS, MO, APRIL 6
t has been an incredible season for
Team Boost Mobile/yamaha/Troy
Racing's Chad Reed. The Australian,
who has yet to finish worse than first
in the 125cc East region, wrapped up
his first American title early, clinching
the 125cc Eastem Regional Championship one race before next week's
Pontiac finale.
Reed is now six for six in the talent-filled class, and he makes it look
easy each time out. The 18-year-old
took the main-event win some 19
seconds ahead of runner-up Eric
Sorby, several days after having
signed a two-year deal with Team
Yamaha that will see the new superstar race in the 250cc class. ObviousIy, his performance has made an
impression.
"This series is now becoming an
international series, and I look forward to racing the best riders in the
world,' Reed said. "I've been dreaming of this my entire life, and I need to
thank my team. They have given me
great support and the chance to earn
this title. I'm looking forward to the
Nationals now.'
Sorby's second-place finish came
in only his second American supercross race ever. The 22-year-old
Frenchman is quickly making a name
for himself here in the States, as he
finished on the podium for the second
race in a row. With a little luck and a
fair dose of talent, the Pro Circuit/
Chevy Trucks Kawasaki rider took
advantage of several big crashes and
settled into second five laps from the
end. He will now campaign all the
remaining races and the Nationals for
the Mitch Payton-run team, with
whom he signed a contract prior to
St. Louis (see Briefly... ).
"I'm very happy and a little surprised," Sorby said in decent English.
"It's only my second race in the U.S.,
and it's my second podium. I'm still
not 100 percent on the new bike, but
we've been testing it a lot."
