A healthy crop of riders showed up
for the 50cc First-Timer division.
When there are lots of riders in this
class, it signals good things to come
for motocross in Northern California.
Nelson Mange put on an impressive
display of aggressiveness and poise
by piloting his little Honda to 1-1
moto victories. Behind him was a
large cluster of riders competing for
the remaining podium positions.
Blaine Coon fought tooth and nail
for second place with 2-4 moto
scores. Tyler Burgess got third via
3-8 finishes.
The 125cc Beginner class also
featured a full gate of riders. The
action on the track was intense as
several riders of similar skill fought
for the podium. Amazingly, Nick
Ponzo came away with perfect 1-1
scores for the day. Behind him, things
were a little more confusing. A.J.
Cavagnero proved that consistency
pays; his 3-4 finishes netted him second overall. Ben Wurm got off to a
good start with a second-place finish
in the first moto, but he found that
things weren't as easy in the final, in
which he placed sixth. His totals were
still good enough for third overall.
One step up the ladder in the
125cc Novice class, things looked
pretty much the same. There were a
ton of riders on the track and a lot of
position changes. Charlie Hartzel
stayed above the fray in both motos
and cruised to the overall victory.
Jimmy Pierce was also consistent,
going 2-2 for second overall. Fairfield's Vincent Guisande took third in
the first moto and fourth in the final;
his combined score of seven was
enough to hold off Wesley Norris for
third overall.
In addition to all of the regular
classes, the Over The Hill Gang was
on hand and out in force. Tons of
these "mature" riders came out to run
against each other. The Over 30
Intermediate class was one of the
best. Several lead changes made the
racing as exciting to watch as it must
have been to participate in. In the first
race, Mountain View's Jason Silva got
a good start, battled with a few other
riders, but came out with the win and
the advantage going into the final.
Bruce Baker finished right behind
him. Race two saw a reversal of fortune. After another good battle, Baker
came out on top. Though both of
them tied in total points, the nod for
the overall went to Baker because the
second moto is always the tie breaker. Chad Little made his short drive
from Vacaville payoff by taking third
overall with 4-3 moto scores.
The Over The Hill Gang Over 38
Intermediate class was amazingly full
and also featured some great racing.
John Hodge, another Vacaville resident, was simply dominant, sweeping
both motos to take the overall victory. Willie Willis did the same to a
lesser degree, taking second overall.
Tim Dunn and Steve Bellen had a
