Moose Northern California Championship Enduro Series Motul B/C Championship Enduro Series Round 2/1: Wild Boar Enduro and Pascarella (both riding on minute three) had passed the first two rows of riders and were up front, breaking trail for the rest of the pack. Martinson had already crashed hard a couple of times. "I cTashed a third time about halfway into the loop," Martinson said, "and decided I better smooth out." Ru....11 rustled up his second consecutive Wild Boar victory, STORY AND PHOTOS BY JILL ASHWORTH PATTERSON CLEAR CREEK, CA, MAR. 10 I-l0x's Billy Russell defended his Wild Boar Enduro championship title by claiming the overall victory for the second consecutive year. Russell also retained the perpetual trophy - a mounted wild boar head for another year. The Timekeepers MC-hosted event was held the day after their Wild Piglet Family Enduro, which was round one of District 36's Family Enduro Series and in the new District 36 Youth Enduro Series. (See the "Results" section.) Staged at BLM's Clear Creek Recreation Area, day two of "The Wild Weekend" served as the second round of the Moose Northern California Championship Enduro Series and round one of the Motul B/C Championship Enduro Series. "I rode as fast as I could in the tough sections," Goat Eyewear/Barnett/Torco-sponsored Russell said, "like I didn't care about crashing, or anything." Despite a predicted storm that threatened to leave the course nearly as treacherous as the preceding Quicksilver National Enduro, a good V 38 APRIL 10, 2002' cue •• pin it" 24-mph speed average, which qUickly divided the leaders. A tough trail called the "Red Rocky Upper" cost several riders their clutches, including Faultline Suspen· sion/Enduro Engineering/Fox· backed Butler. "My clutch began slipping; then there was nothing I could do about it: Butler said. "I had to ride as smooth in the bushes as I could." After tackling 10 miles of the challenging trails, Russell's alertness and speed showed at check nine with his low score of 4.260. Butler scored next with 5.305, and Bennett Distributing/Moose Off Road/Motion Pro Braking-sponsored Tim Stowe, who had been riding with· out a computer since before the 2.9mile marker, dropped 6.373. "I burned the first check after my computer went out," Stowe said, "but I knew I could let it rip in the third loop and make up some time." Pascarella and Martinson, along with a few others, logged scores in the sevens. "Some of those trails were just hammering-rough," Pascarella said. "We only got one chance to do them right." Zoom Cycle Accessories/KW Wheels/Moose-supported Martinson turnout of riders showed for the popular TMC event. Great course conditions greeted riders on the three-loop route, as the storm didn't materialize. Dust was minimal along the ridges and fire roads, and there were damp trails boasting great traction. The 44-mile-long first loop went through Jade Mill, along a last-minute reroute around the "Tunnel of Love," and then headed toward New Idria and the Mexican Reservoir. About 13 miles into the loop, there was some confusion with a mileage marker that was still up from the previous day's race, and the majority of the Band C classes, from row 29 back, took a long, unplanned reset. As a result, the scores at checks two and three were thrown out. When the A-class riders left the first gas stop and tackled Indian Hill at the beginning of loop two, the majority had scores of zero, and it was anyone's race. By the end of the second loop's 36 miles, there were still 14 scores in the zeroes, including that of B Vet Adam Sprague, which revealed that up to this point it had been a real timekeeping enduro. The entire C class and the A and B Super Senior and Gentlemen classes were finished at check seven. At the restart at check eight, Shift/Smith/Motoxotica.com-supported Mike Pascarella held the lead with 0.13, and Glenn Martinson was second with 0.15. Brian Butler and Phil Douglas each had scores of 0.18, and Kevin Wiley was next with 0.20. The others' cards showed 0.25s or more, including Russell's 0.54. At the final check, Russell astonished everyone, including himself, with his score of three - compared to the pair of sixes dropped by Butler and Stowe. "He was definitely on the lick!" exclaimed Butler. "He really got us there, big time." Russell's final score of 7.314 secured his victory. Butler claimed second with 11.323 and Stowe finished third with 14.408. Pascarella landed fourth with 15.431, followed closely by Martinson's 15.451. Sprague took the B-c1ass win and 12th overall with 26.729. David Frederickson claimed the C-c1ass victory. "I'm glad I was able to salvage a good finish," Stowe said. "The course was great!"
