D&J Ranch: Mindy Porter (L1S) takes the lead In the Ladies Expert contest at the second round of TCCRA action In Bonita, Texas. Clay Hoenshell, who was born and raised in Oklahoma City. "Hoenshell was three or four corners in front of me near the end of the first lap," recounted Wash. "I caught him and passed him right after the chute." No stranger to cross country, Wash took first overall in the Oklahoma Cross County Racing Association in 2000 and will race his first full season this year in Texas with TCCRA. While leading the second lap, Wash made a mistake that would prove to be costly: He stopped to get gas. "HoensheU passed me when I pitted," he said. "I pushed as hard as I could, but I was getting tired and could never make it up." "I got off to a slow start - it was a cold morning," said Granbury Kawasaki/TeamGreen/Moose/IMS/ Renthal/Scott-sponsored Hoenshell. "I dropped my arms to thaw out my hands and Lane blew by me. It was going to be a good race - he was on the gas, for sure! ·Later on, I was about seven seconds from him when his chain broke. He threw his arms up and I threw up mine, kind of saying to each other, 'It's always something!' I really thought we were going to have a good race this time out. After I passed Wash getting gas, I set in to a good pace for the third and fourth lap. Apparently, Wash fell off the pace, because I didn't see him again." Taking their normal noon start, the Ladies and Minis found the track to be full of "man-swallowing" whoops after the Pros had pounded the track for more than two hours. In the Ladies Expert division, 16-year-old Suzuki jockey Mindy Porter shot out of the hole like a rocket and never looked back during her two-lap race. "I had my head on something my mentor, Women's Expert Laura 50 APRIL 10. 2002' cue I _ Boyer, has always told me: 'It's better to slow down for 15 seconds over something than to crash and lose three minutes pi.cking up and starting your bike,''' recalled Pro Privateer/Dad-sponsored Porter, whose average lap time was competitive with the those of the top riders of the 125cc Amateur class. "Race after next, I plan to do my Ladies race at noon, then the boys' race after that." Hoenshell watched Porter in amazement. "That girl is fast - crazy fast!" he declared. "She definitely has no fear." "I recently trained with Clay on my starts and have taken the holeshot in both of my races so far!" Porter said. "Mindy and I don't have your typical father-teenage daughter arguments," reported her father, Bill Hugill. "We argue over her racing the boys more than about dating them!" eN D&J Ranch Bonibl, Te•• Results: March 9-10, 2002 (Round 21 P/W 50 NOV: J. Lee McCollum (Hon); 2. Trevor Buck (Pol); 3.
