Roebling Road Raceway: Tim Joyce took his 0&0 Cycles 500cc Triumph to the win In Vintage Two competition and then won the Vintage Three contest aboard his 750cc Triumph at the opening round of WERA Vintage Racing In Faulkvllle, Georgia. WEBA Vintage Racing Round 1: Roebling Road Raceway Joyce Doubles at WERAOpener Bv STEVE STASER FAULKVILLE, GA, MAR. 1 t's been a long winter for WERA Vintage racers since the Grand National Finals were held back in October, but they were out in force in Faulkville, as more than 200 entries filled the grids in this sixth annual season kickoff Vintage-only event at Roebling Road. Tim Joyce from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, who is the defending champion in Vintage Three and Vintage Four, has decided to bring out his 500cc Triumph this year and contest the Vintage Two class instead of the trying to defend his Vintage Four crown. The D&D Cycles/Teknic Leathers-sponsored rider rode this same 500 to the championship in the I Mediumweight Classic division back in 2000. The Vintage Two race was the one to watch. Joyce lined up with Buff Harsh, the class winner the last two years running aboard, the very potent Todd Henning-backed Honda. As the race started, the duo emerged from the big pack first and second, but they were bringing a third bike with them. It was David Rutherford, on a lighting-fast, Ted Hubbard-prepared BSA single. Rutherford was showing he could stay with the best of them! Much to the delight of the crowd, the trio stayed within a couple of bike lengths the entire race; on a couple of laps, they came across the line three abreast. Joyce put the draft on as they blasted out of the last sweeper headed for the finish. The Triumph rider pulled ahead of Rutherford and ,----------------------------------,'" z ~ '" ~ 1;; ~ won by half a wheel, leaving Harsh in third. "This is going to be a tough Vintage Two class this year," said Harsh at the awards presentation. Joyce enjoyed his second win of the day in Vintage Three, this time on his 750cc Triumph, which took him to his two titles last year. Mark Nadelkov, also from Florida, brought his WKR Yamaha 650 home second, over Chris Hurst, also Yamaha-mounted. George Osmond took a RS250 Honda to the win in the new Vintage Seven class over the Baxley Trajler Company FZRI000 of William Mayfield and Bryon Dumas's Florida Motorsports Ducati 984. Christopher Spargo won the Formula 500 event over current champ Mark Morrow's MRA Yamaha and David Evans, on a 550cc Honda. Canton, Georgia's Gary Smith took his GSA-GP Vintage 200cc Honda home first in the GP 350cc class, over John Stevens' Ducati and Doug Bowie, aboard the Cycle Specialties of Athens Ducati. Lynford Garland won the battle of the RDs, taking his Vintage Specialties 400cc Yamaha to the win over Chris Stevenson and Robert Macaulay. Team Obsolete's David Roper blistered the field on his 500cc Matchless by winning the 500cc GP contest over Rutherford's BSA and Phoenixville, Pennsylvania's Jesse Morris, on a 500cc Triumph. Harsh was back to his old self in Vintage One. He ran away from the field to take the win. Team Steve-a's Eric Cook handled second, with Daytona Cycles' Royce Eaton third. Mayfield had his FZR 1000 at the front to take the win in his familiar Vintage Six class. Osmond and Ray Hickman filled out the top three. The buzz of the USCRA invitational 125cc GP race filled the air as the top five riders battled all race long, swapping positions several times. Karl Smolenski emerged from the pack first, over Phillip Turk;ngton and Bob Demetrius, aU on 125cc Hondas. Vintage Five had the Yamaha twostrokes of Hurst and Spargo finish ahead of the 600cc four-stroke of Fred Hopp. Chris Marshall showed everyone why he's the 2002 champion of the 250cc GP, as he and his Team Giannini 250cc Ducati took off and hid 46 APRIL 10, 2002' cue I • n __ • IllIeIIlilll lINd IIKe1ny Fulbille, &....ill Results: Maln:l1 1, ZHZ (Rend 11 125 GP: I.
