Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series Round 2: Old Crow Hare Scrambles Craig W.sner flew to the overall victory at the Old Crow Hare Scrambles, round two of the Moose Westem Regional Cross Country Series. to work my way through the pack on the first lap," noted Sperle, who then managed to hook up with Hayward Suzuki/Cycle Gear/Posey Racingbacked Rod Kreiss. Sperle followed Kreiss for the first couple of laps as the two moved into the third and fourth spots. Near the middle of the race, Kreiss had a scary get-off that allowed Sperle to move into third. "In one of the real high-speed sections, !crashed," said Kreiss. "I kind of lucked out for as fast as I was going and just slid out." Positions remained consistent among the By CHRIS GHIONE AND MICHELLE LEE PHOTOS BY MICHELLE LEE Brian Sperle 16) and Rod Krein 13) battled for runner-up honors for much of the race at the Camegle State Vehicular Recreation Area just outside Livermore, Califomla, with the nod going to Sperl•• Krein was just nine seconds behind him. UVERMORE, CA, MAR. 3 (\ I , hen the dust cleared after the W running of the Old Crow Hare Scrambles, it was Team Green Kawasaki rider Craig Wesner who was left standing. Wesner took the overall victory at the race held just outside Livermore, California, at Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area. The event, put on by Redneck Roosters Motorcycle Club, marked round two of the Moose Western Regional Cross Country Series. A record turnout of nearly 550 riders showed up to participate in the day's events, but in the dry conditions, more people meant one thing: more dust. The club was able to put together a fast and fun 8-mile course for riders to enjoy, despite having to leap through a few hurdles. The State Park staff who operate the facility required that major changes to the course be made just three days prior to the event. The club managed to get the changes made just in time to have the event, although they were forced to take out almost all of the fun single-track sections for which the area is renowned. More than 200 riders lined up to battle the dust in the first race of the day. When the gunshot sounded, Suzuki-mounted Tim Stowe grabbed the holeshot and led the way out onto the motocross track and grass-track area that started the course. Stowe led the field early, but before exiting the motocross track he had some problems following the course markings and made a wrong turn, letting a couple of riders by. One of those riders was the San Luis Motorsports/Moose/Dunlop-sponsored 44 APRIL 10, 2002' cue I Wesner, who was quickly making his way through the field. "I got into the first turn around 10th or so," Wesner related. "After that, I just tried to get really aggressive in the first few turns of the motocross track." After moving ahead of Stowe, Wesner quickly took the lead from Honda rider Kevin McGovern. Faultline/Woodland Cycles/Bennett Distributing-backed Stowe qUickly recovered from his earlier mistake to move into second, behind Wesner, but he was unable to stick with the Kawasaki rider. "I wasn't up to the pace of to follow Craig's dust, so I kind of just backed off," said Stowe. Despite falling back behind Wesne(, Stowe opened up some distance from the rest of the field. Suffering from a slower start was KTM/IMS rider Brian Sperle, who had to play catch-up after a bobble at the start. "In the first comer, I lost my front end and kind of slid out and just had • n e _ s leaders until near the end of the fourth lap, when Stowe surprised Wesner by passing him for the lead. Stowe's time in the lead was short, though, as he had to pit for gas and Wesner, who had pitted on the previous lap, was able move back out front. Stowe then lost a couple more positions when both Sperle and Kreiss were able to make quick gas stops and leave the pits before Stowe. Wesner was able to hold his lead for the remaining to laps to take the overall win. The battle for second continued to the end of the race, with Kreiss attempting to catch Sperle. The distance between the two shifted as they made their way through heavy lapped traffic. In the end, Sperle held on to take second, with Kreiss just nine seconds behind him. Stowe rode home in fourth place, just slightly behind Sperle and Kreiss. MPC/Eurocycle/Barnett Distributing-backed KTM rider Bryce Olsen was fifth. Riding in sixth and seventh for much of the race were Honda riders Cole Marshall and Brian Butler. Marshall, unfortunately, was forced out of the race by mechanical problems, leaving the Fox/V-Force-sponsored Butler to come in a lonely sixth. Taking home the seventh and eighth spots were Honda-mounted Steve Bonita and Jeriah Gurley. Rounding out the top 10 were John Mason and David Fish, both on Yamahas. The top B rider on the day was Honda-mounted Lane Mount, and in the afternoon C race, the winner was Robert Pierce, aboard a Yamaha. Some of the younger riders were also able to participate in the day's events, and the winners included Chad Martin in the B 80cc class and Marcus Wansic in the B 50cc class.
