Diamond Back Motocross Parte Torre Streifthau (25) goes for the pass on Keith Davidson (151) in 125cc C action at the fourth round of the Southeast X-treme Winter Challenge series in Resaca, Georgia. Strelfthau took the moto win, the overall, and the series championship. Southeast X·treme Winter Challe eSeries Round 4: Diamond Back Motocross Parte Decision Day at Diamond Back By PAC LEWIS RESACA,GA,FEB.17 great crowd turned out for the final round of the Southeast Xtreme Winter Challenge Series, and with many series titles up for grabs, the racing was as hard as ever. All eyes were on 125cc C class, because three riders had positioned themselves in contention for the championship. Torre Streifthau had a narrow lead over Justin Graham, and Andrew Gaddis was a very close third, needing good results on this day to take the title. When the gate dropped for the first moto, however, it was Alabama's Zach Rossetti who took the holeshot, letting the rest of the pack scramble for position. Second was Extreme Cycle's Keith Davidson on his KTM, followed by Gaddis on his SuzukiYamaha of Dalton-backed Suzuki. Streifthau was midpack, as was Graham after he hit neutral on the start. Rossetti was setting a blistering pace and pulled quite a lead over Davidson and Gaddis, but Streifthau and Graham were cutting through the pack, determined not to give the championship away. Rossetti won the first moto without a challenge, with Davidson and Gaddis second and third. Streifthau made it up to fourth on the 2-mile course before he ran out of laps, followed by Shane Mills and Graham, who had a great battle A for fifth on the last lap. In moto two, Davidson got the holeshot over Rossetti, followed closely by Streifthau, Mills, Gaddis and Graham. By lap two, Rossetti had pulled out due to bike problems, leaving Davidson and Streifthau to battle for the lead. In a bold move, Streifthau went to the outside of a downhill turn and tried to outmotor Davidson up the next long hill. The move worked, but Davidson wasn't going to give up that easily. Staying on Streifthau's heels, Davidson attempted to outjump Streifthau on the infield triple but cased the jump hard and went down. With Davidson out, Gaddis was second, as he had gotten around Mills. Streifthau took the moto win, the overall, and the series championship in one hardfought battle. Second on the day went to Gaddis, Mills was third, and fourth went to last week's winner, Graham. Women's National Champion Leah Cantrell garnered third place, behind Dustin Rowe and Jase Lewis, in 85cc (12-15) action. Lewis took the firstmoto win rather easily, leaving Cantrell and Rowe to battle for second, which Rowe barely captured at the finish. In the second moto, Rowe took the holeshot and led the way, holding off both Lewis and Cantrell, who finished second and third. Lewis had another battle on his hands in the Supermini (12-15) contest. Chip Weatherup led the first four laps of the first moto, but a bad line choice allowed Lewis to get around for the win. In moto two, Lewis was out front, with Weatherup in second, trying every which way to get around, but Lewis took the win. Weatherup placed second. Jon Boy Monk took top Pro honors, winning both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes in convincing fashion. Monk was jumping four-deep into a treacherous section dubbed the "Diamond Back 10-Pack." Second in 250cc A was Ryan Elleby, and third went to Sean LeCroy, who was in the fight until bike problems took him out of the race. In 125cc B action, D.e. Thomason took the win over Dash Lyle. In the second moto, Lyle took the holeshot, but Thomason soon got around on the Extreme Cycle KTM and took the win. The 250cc B contest was much the same, with Thomason and Lyle battling for the lead, but again Thomason took the win. Lyle won the series, though, and also the overall in 16-24 action. T.e. Ughtsey took second on the day in the 16-24 class, followed by Gaddis and Cory Cone. Mike Garrett and Kevin Cozadd went at it in the Vet Over 25 and Over 30 classes. In the Over 25 contest, Garrett made a last-lap pass in moto one, swinging to the outside of a steep downhill and outmotoring Cozadd up the next steep hill to take the win. In the second moto, Garrett again took a hard-earned victory to take the overall. The two met again in the Over 30 class, and in moto one Cozadd took the lead on lap one and never let Garrett by. The winner of moto two would take the overall. Garrett got the holeshot, with Cozadd in tow, but Cozadd miscalculated on a jump and went down, allowing Garrett to take the win, with Cozadd finishing second. eN DiIIlHntI a.dI Mllbica _ P8rtl Ileuca, lieergill IIeSlIIts: Fe"'-Y 17, ZlIIZ lIeullll 41 50 SHAFT: 1. MXWest Spring Series Round 2: Stead Raceway Norman Sweeps in Stead By ROBERT BEAUPRE STEAD, NY, FEB. 24 n February 24th, the Stead, Nevada, motocross facility played host to one of the first warm spring days in Nevada this year, and thus provided a fitting spot for round two of the MXWest Spring Series. Brought to everyone by the people at Nevada Motocross Development (NMXD), the hard-packed Stead lay- O out was hammered over the course of the day by a 17-moto program, which included more than a dozen riders within the 125cc and 250cc Pro divisions. Unquestionably the most successful of the Pros was Yamaha- a u c • _ mounted Randy Norman, who swept both classes with a 1-1-1-1 tally on the day. In the 125cc class, Norman took his YZ 125 to the front in both motos very qUickly, but he did not pull away easily. Tommy Jean put his Honda firmly in the second spot from the start and actually stayed quite close to Norman in the early stages of each moto. As the races wore on, though, Norman found his stride and put a comfortable margin on Jean and the rest of the field. Jean held tight for second in both motos to score the runner-up spot on the day, while Darryl Haney (who also contests the Over 30 Pro class) placed his RM125 n _ _ so • APRIL 3, 2002 69
