Forrester was able to get through the late-race lapped traffic well and avoid any mistakes that would give Thiele an opportunity, and he took the overall win - the fourth of Forrester's career and his third victory at the Elk Creek venue. Thiele held on to a very close second, ahead of Nesbitt, who edged out Shaw by a few feet. Wuebbeling battled a hurting arm to claim fifth, ahead of Duncan. The top non-AA rider on the day was Axo/Michelin-backed Caleb Wohletz, on a KTM 200. Making his voluntary A-class debut, the 16-yearold speedster broke free of a two-Jap battle with Hansen's/Devol rider Tracy Bauman to take a commanding win and finish the day in 12th overall. Bauman ended up fourth in class, behind John Struckhoff and another teenager, Yamaha 125 rider Anthony Meyer. eN EJll en.. Leb.noD, Missouri Results: February 24, 2002 (Round 1J O/A: I. Bv DICK GOODWIN MESQOITE,NV,MAR.2 O ne person who knows a lot about being number one is 125/250cc Intermediate rider Derek Costella. Whether it's first base, first prize or first place, Costella always seems to start strong and be there at the end. And Saturday, March 2, was no exception, as the FMF/Pro Action star grabbed hoJeshot after holeshot and stormed home for several wire-towire victories in the 250cc Pro/Intermediate and 125cc Pro/Intermediate contests. In an uncommon (for him) occurrence, Costella just missed the opening holeshot of the first 125cc Pro/Intermediate moto, as Pro CircUit/N-Style-sponsored Brandon Barnes nipped him at the first corner. Costella swooped past almost immediately and was out in front of the combined race after the first couple of turns. Behind Barnes, the pack was sorting itself out, as Sports West/Spy's Monte Montague was leading Alpine's Husqvarna ace Levi Jensen and Honda-mounted Scott Theobald in the battle for third. Costella had his Suzuki on fire out in front, as Barnes solidified his hold on second. Montague continued to lead Jensen and Theobald as the riders spread out at the end of the race. Round one to Costella. Costella snapped the holeshot to start race two. Barnes and Theobald were right on his tail. Once again, Costella made it look easy as he spurted off from the rest of the field. As before, Barnes was proving the best of the rest, as he put another stranglehold on second. The fight was really over third, as Acerbis-backed Micky Griffin, Jensen and Montague IF ITALIAN PASSION, PERFORMANCE, AND TECHNOLOGY AREN'T REASON ENOUGH ... HOW ABOUT 751 MORE REASONS?
