" Sources in Europe say that JeanMichel Bayle has tested a Red Bull Yamaha YZR500 in Valencia, Spain, with the team looking to use Bayle at the Japanese Grand Prix if Garry McCoy is not able to start. The second rider on the team is California teenager John Hopkins. Team RGM, the first United States road racing sidecar team to enter the World Championship sidecar series in Europe, was thwarted in their attempt by a new rule put in place for 2002, according to a release issued by the team. Although their equipment passed all requirements and all their licenses were current and correct, the team was told just before Friday practice due to the fact that the driver, Rick Murray, was over 50 years old, they would not be allowed on the track. Murray had passed all physical and medical requirements requested by the FIM late in 2001 and the team had no idea that this discrimination would occur, the team says. In spite of efforts of the Superside General Manager, Gary Francis, the rule could not be changed for this weekend, which was the first of 10 events in 2002. The team has not given up the fight, and hopes to be able to return for the event in Monza, Italy, in May. AMA 250cc Grand Prix racer Randy Renfrow is getting better and will race again. Renfrow's John Lassak-tuned Honda RS250 was rammed from behind while running through the dogleg on the warm-up lap for a CCS race. He was transported to Halifax Medical Center that he said was the "worst hospital I've ever been in, but that's not condemning everyone there." As to whether he'd race again, he said. "Yeah, probably so. That depends on how bad the knee is. This is probably going to speed up. not when I retire, but quit. This is just another illustration that shows how easy it is to get hurt bad. Round two, slated for Saturday, April 6, will be the Yamaha West Region Dealers lOOk, while round three on Sunday, April 7, will be the Yamaha lOOK. I had to lift my leg up with my arm, and if my foot were to slip off in the race, you can imagine my problems then! Otherwise, I think I could have still done well and gained some valuable points."
