Formula USA/Lockhart-Phillips Unlimited Superbike Series Round 1: Daytona International Speedway The order changed on the third lap when Acree crashed in the chicane after coming together with Higbee. "Barney [Barnes] had the lead and I turned in to the chicane and then somebody hit me and I went sideways and did a whole lot of tumbling," Acree said. "I'm amazed Shawn [Higbee] didn't fall. He was apologetic. It's all good." Higbee lost several spots in the incident but stayed upright. "I went up the inside of [Lee] Acree and couldn't get it stopped quite enough to clear him, so our tires were side by side, and when he turned in, our tires locked and sent him sideways, and then I had to go off the road and outside of the chicane," he said. "Thankfully, he's all right. " Barnes was leading, with Wood now second and Pegram third ending the fourth lap. The rain had intensified and F-USA officials made the decision to stop the race. It would be restarted as an eight-lap rain race. Off the restart, Barnes jetted to the lead and pulled out four seconds on the first lap, adding to it with every lap, even as the rain increased. By the end of the eight laps, he had 11.692 seconds in hand. "It was great for us to come out of here with a win," he said. "I wish I could have gotten more points, but it goes that way sometimes. Even though a lot of people say I'm a good rain rider, I still can't say that I enjoy it." Wood and Scott Greenwood fought over second, followed by Connell and Christopher Ranking. Higbee was another four spots back. Greenwood and Wood got at it, the pair of New Englanders racing as if they were home at Loudon. "I was fortunate enough to have a guy like Scott Greenwood, that I'm real comfortable racing with, get out in front of me and kind of help me set a pace," Wood said. "He's a real strong rain rider, so I used him as a gauge. I knew I had an advantage in that light." Wood used him as a gauge until near the end of the race, when Higbee joined them and it became a three-rider fight. On the final lap, Wood led onto the banking out of the chicane, followed by Higbee, Greenwood and Himmelsbach, with none of the pursuers able to use the draft to steal second. Dayton.
