H/W VINT: Barnes won the GTU race earlier in the day and finished fourth in the GTO, which he used as a practice session. In the GTU race, Prieto nabbed the holeshot, and by the second lap Barnes had worked his way into second place. The two front-runners then opened the gap on the rest of the field. Barnes closed in and later passed Prieto. During Saturday's practice, Barnes experienced an uneventful high-side riding on cold tires and a wet track. The crew was able to make minor repairs and get the bike together in time for Sunday's races. Regarding the NSR 500 loaned to him by Per Hogdahl, he stated, "The bike keeps getting better every time I get on it - I really had fun on it." Barnes received sponsorship assistance for this event from Per Hogdahl, Kelly Hayes, Prieto Racing Inc., and tuner Tony Pogue, to whom Barnes referred as "phenomenal." Narup also experienced a mishap on Saturday. "I thought I was going to have a horrible weekend because I crashed in the pits," stated Narup. "There was oil all in front of our pit, and I took out Pat Weekley's pit bike. That's the first time in three years that I've crashed." The Palmetto Motorsports/Engine Ice/Lockhart Phillips/Artcraft Engraving £, Printing Inc./Blais Cycles-sponsored Narup finished third in GTO and 17th in Unlimited Supersport. The Powersports of Palm Beach/Prieto Racing Inc./GMD Computrack/Cheetah Body Works;Vortexbacked Bowman finished third in GTU and Heavyweight Supersport, fifth in GTO, and 10th in Middleweight Supers port (after running off the track in tum two). The winningest Expert of the weekend was Prieto. He took home four first-place trophies for the GTO, 80 MARCH 13,2002' r: Ur:I • Unlimited Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, and Middleweight Superbike races. Also, he finished second in GTU and Heavyweight Supersport. He is sponsored by Custom Glass Company, Pirelli, Penske, Nutec and Suzuki. In the Amateur ranks, there was a tie for the most wins between Justyn Bradley and Ralph Fernandez. Each went home with three first-place trophies. Fernandez won the GTO, Unlimited Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport events. Bradley won GTU, Middleweight Supersport, and Middleweight Grand Prix. He also finished second (to Fernandez) in Heavyweight Supersport and GTO. The annual awards banquet for the CCS Florida Region was held the night before the race to honor all of the champions from last year's events and to hand out the highly coveted number plates to the prior season's top 10 riders. Rookie Expert Jeremy Haiduk was presented with the awa rd for top Amateur racer of the 2001 season. Expert rider Marco Martinez was presented with the number-one plate for finishing the season as Florida's overall points leader, for which he received a standing ovation from the entire room. And to top that, he set a regional record by winning a grand total of seven championships. Martinez won the Heavyweight Supersport and Heavyweight Superbike races on Sunday and finished second in the GTO and Unlimited Supersport events. eN HDmestaad-Miami Speedway HDmestead, Aorlda Results; February 10, 2002 AM. NEIRA Enduro Series Round 1: Connecticut Ramblers Snow Run Enduro Timothy Melts the Snow Run By JOE MCLAUGHLIN W.STAFFORD,CT,FEB.l0 P lenty of unusual things happened at the 2002 NETRA Snow Run Enduro. First, there was no snow: An unusually mild winter left the trails frozen, even with ice in places, but no snowfall had been seen in the area for weeks. Second, Kevin Hines did not win; not that he's unbeatable, but usually when Hines shows up, everyone else is racing for second place. Last but not least, the Overall High Point went to someone riding only his second NETRA enduro; normally he's dominating the NETRA Hare Scrambles. The mild temperatures and a threat of rain left many riders questioning whether the Snow Run would even be held on its scheduled date. Trail boss Jim Green and the rest of the Connecticut Ramblers would not be denied, though. With the enduro gods smiling, the rain held off until just about the time the last rider was due back. The lack of snow made for a relatively easy event. Most sections were short, which helped to keep the scores low and tight. Tie breakers turned out to be instrumental in sepa- rating the top 25 or so riders. When everything was tallied up, three-time NETRA Hare Scrambles champion Patrick Timothy took the Overall High Point with a score of only three. This was the first NETRA enduro win for the KTM rider, in only his second attempt. What's really impressive about the win is the fact that the event was a real test of timekeeping skills, with many checks that were potentially easy to burn - normally no easy feat for someone who is used to just flat out hauling from start to finish. Peter Tanner tied his career-best finish of second overall, first AA, with a score of four. Kevin Hines' score of five was seven seconds faster than Hans Neff's five after counting emergency points, which was good enough for third and fourth overall, second and third AA, respectively. Neil Dennett and Dave Carlson Jr. fought tooth and nail for the fifthoverall spot. Both riders dropped six points on the day and both dropped 1:28 in emergency points. Dennett stole the spot by virtue of his onepoint score at check 10 vs. the two of Carlson, who took home the A High Point trophy for an outstanding ride.
