Happenings In Motorcycling
It was announced at the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. recently that Riders
For Health, the current U.K. Charity of the Year, was one of 34 winners worldwide in the
Development Marketplace Competition. The project entered by Riders For Health was the
funding of the builcllng and testing of two Uhuru community development vehicles in Zimbabwe. The Development Marketplace Competition, a recent innovation of the World
Bank, attracted 2400 entries in 2001. Of these, 207 were invited to Washington to present
their projects and to network with other competitors. Riders For Heaith was one of 34
eventual winners. ·We are absolutely thrilled with this award," said Andrea Coleman, chief
executive (finance) of Riders For Health. "It means we can go ahead with production in
Africa and deliver on our commitment to those impoverished communities in Zimbabwe
who have known about and
wanted Uhurus for several
years. They won't all get
them at once, but a start has
been made. We believe this
will turn out to be quite an
historic moment. Once
again. we must give credit for
Mike Norman for his original
idea, which has proved to be
of real value to people liVing
in serious poverty."
James Wolfensohn, president of the World Bank, presented the award to the Riders For Health team.
