Tiger Lacey scored the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class wins at round 10 of the Northwest Arenacross Nationals. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 17 , dahoans Matt and Sam DeAtley and Oregon's Tiger Lacey were among the dominant riders at the Forster Livestock Pavilion round of the Lee Collins-promoted Northwest Arenacross Nationals, held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The event drew well over 300 riders from four western states. Matt DeAtley was the day's top performer, waging in a three-class decimation of the 60cc Senior (9-11). 60cc Open and 80cc (9-11) classes and also placing third in the ultra competitive Supermini class, which was won by his brother Sam. In addition to his Supermini-class win, Sam won the 80cc (12-13) class. Lacey, whose busy weekend began with a 125cc Pro-class championship at the Northwest Supercross Championships, capped off a dominating weekend with the 125cc and 250cc Pro-class victories in what was his third consecutive day of racing. Lacey, from Wolf Creek, Oregon, snared wins in both classes with 1-1 sweeps aboard a pair of Suzukis. Another of the series' regulars, Washington's Ross Johnson, has made the step up from the 80cc ranks to dominate the 125cc and Before The Hill Junior classes. On this day, the Yamaha rider scored two Jeremy McLain rounded out the top three overall. KTM rider Pete Sannan and Honda pilot Ryan Huege have been the dominant riders in the 125cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes here this season, and the series regulars found out just how tough the two were to beat. Huege and Sannan split moto wins in the Before The Hill class, but Sannan got the overall win when first-moto winner Huege suffered some misfortune. Tyler Meyer finished second to Sannan overall, while another of the multitude of Washingtonians, Tyson Blood, trailed Sannan in his 125cc Intermediate-class victory. Lacey's first of two overall wins came in the 125cc Pro class. Despite pressure from a host of series regulars, including series points leader Tracy Johnson, Lacey scored a double-moto rout. Lacey led every lap of both motos to snare the lion's share of the purse, which included contingency money from all of the major manufacturers. Johnson finished second to class victories, despite tough competition from fellow Evergreen State rider Kevin Urquhart, who finished second to Johnson in the two classes. However, Urquhart's day wasn't a total loss, as the Honda rider later came back to dominate the 250cc Junior class. Trailing Urquhart in the 250cc class was the rider who has dominated here locally all year, Honda jockey Mitchell Robbins. Local Yamaha rider (Below) Mitchell Robbins saw his season-long domination of the 250cc Junior class come to an end at the hands of Washington's Kevin Urquhart. Robbins finished second overall in Salem, Oregon. The outcome was much the same in the 250cc Pro class, as the 18-year-old Lacey leveled the competition in a doublemoto blitz. Lacey did, however, have tough competition from Yamaha-mounted Ryan Leach, but Leach got a bad start in moto one and spent several laps reeling in Johnson before eventually finishing second. The Supermini class was at overflow capacity and, in order to trim the field of riders to 16 (the maximum gate capacity). two qualifiers and a lastchance qualifier were necessary. Much as in the first of the two qualifiers, the main was a Sam DeAtley demolition. Local Yamaha rider Nathan Whitlow was Sam's closest competitor, finishing second, ahead of the younger of the two DeAtley brothers from Lewiston, Matt. One of the youngest riders in the field, 10-year-old Tevin Tapia, finished fourth, slightly ahead of local rider Aaron McClinton. Throughout the series, Matt DeAtley has logged an impressive string of victories.
