Two Days of Brianza Trials STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIO CANDELLONE MONZA, ITALY, FEB. 23-24 'i117 ith the World Championship TriW als Series a little over a month away and only a few riders invited to the World Championship Indoor Trials Series, some of the planet's top talents turned out for the 20th edition of this famous Italian two-day event for a bit of a warm-up. And after many years of foreign winners, an Italian Fabio Lenzi - finally took the home victory. Not only that, but even runner-up Diego Bosis is from the bootshaped country. The event utilized one unique loop run on both days, Scottish-style, a format that seems to give smallername riders more of a chance against the heroes. For example, Spanish ace Marcel Justribo forgot that Italian rules don't allow entering a section 'through any entrance, and when he went through the wrong-colored flags in section two on day one, he got a five. (Despite riding quickly with Kenichi Kuroyama on day two, he did not improve his position.) Speaking of Kuroyama, the Japanese rider made the podium and declared himself enamored with the event, saying it is good training for two approaching important rounds of the Japanese National Championship. (He flew home on Wednesday after the event.) This was the first time at the Due Giomi for top French rider Bruno Camozzi, who was brought by his manager and three-time World Champion Thierry Michaud. Camozzi was not a fan of the lengthy paved transfer sections that are characteristic of this competition - which is, after 62 MARCH 13. 2002' cue I italians Fabio Lenzi (Iettl and Diego Boals (right) were literally at home at this Important event, finishing first and second, respectively. all, held just 12 miles outside the city of Milan (the start is in Monza, where the famous road-racing circuit is located). Amazingly, it was also the first time at the event for the winner. Weather was sunny and windy (especially on Sunday), with temperatures around 50 degrees. DAV 1 More than 100 riders divided themselves among four different courses, with the first rider heading out at 10:30 a.m. They had five hours to complete the loop, which consisted of 38 miles and 20 sections. (The first and last were indoor-style, near the start, and many of the others were grouped in twos, so that the first ended where the second started.) All the top riders were grouped from numbers 60 to 90. Justribo was quite nervous after his early mistake, and he didn't ride well in the other zones. At the end of the day, Lenzi led with 16 points, four ahead of the tied Kuroyama-Bosis duo. Then came young Italian Michele • n __ s Orizio, with 24, four less than Camozzi. In sixth was Daniele Maurino, with Justribo only seventh, with 37! DAve Starting at 8:30 a.m. in reverse order from Saturday, riders had 6 1/2 hours to ride a 50-mile loop with 30 sections. Remembering last year, when most of the top riders finished late and were disqualified, Kuroyama and Justribo escaped together and finished the competition very early. Their scores were not bad (25 for Kuroyama and 28 for Justribo), but after them, Bosis, Camozzi and leader Lenzi were able to do better, proving that sometimes it's better to take the time to study a section. The best score on the loop was posted by Bosls, at 20, just one better than Lenzi and three better than Camozzi. Therefore, the results situation did not change at the top, and Lenzi won over Bosis and Kuroyama. Camozzi was behind Orizio in fifth, thanks in part to a two-point penalty I:I1II for being late.
