circuit - an SX-worthy double jump and two steep mounds of log-covered earth. Halfway around the lap was the crowd's favorite obstacle the water crossing (a plastic-lined, J 8-lnch-deep lake filled with rocks and a sizable fallen tree). Next was a 33-foot straight littered with soccerball-sized rocks - slippery thanks to the water being carried from the previous crossing. A muddy, banked right turn provided one of the few passing opportunities, and then came two superchallenging obstacles a boulder-covered tabletop jump followed by a log-covered step-up jump. Next came a "hillclimb" (a rather easy giant tabletop), and a final, sandy turn and a rutted, sandy whoop section. All in all, it made for intense laps of about a minute and a half each - not exactly the same as a J 50-mile day in the woods of the Czech Republic, but a challenging proposition nonetheless. Organizers neatly split the racing into two- and four-stroke divisions, with heats and LCQs narrowing the fields down to three riders each for the superfinal - a concept that is easy for casual fans to follow. This obviously isn't traditional enduro riding, and traditionally fast enduro riders don't always perform best; for example, ISDE aces Stefan Merriman and Mika Ahola failed to qualify this year. Juha Salminen adapted better, taking the superfinal win over David Knight and the fourstroke of Alessandro Botturi. With a packed arena (J J ,000 spectators) and tight racing action, it's apparent that the organizers proved that enduros can be successfully taken indoors. The questions that remain are whether this is simply a Spanish phenomenon (the country's citizens are extremely passionate motors port enthusiasts) and whether the concept could be extended into an entire series (not unlike the Indoor Trials World Championship). It certainly can't hurt that this year's event attracted strong sponsorship and even television coverage, but more importantly, the spirit of enduro-racing is retained. Okay, so it doesn't have much to do with "endurance," but the same could be said for many modern outdoor enduros. What it does is take the most interesting and exciting part of the sport - the special test - and condense it into an actionpacked, easy-to-swallow and, perhaps more importantly, easy-tounderstand family spectacle. Think of it as six riders lining up together at the start of a supercross race, but then replace the track with an unfamiliar trials course littered with obstacles that require JDO-percent concentration (in a situation that rarely allows it). Then drop the gate, sit back and enjoy free-for-all races of 6 J/2 minutes each. When can we have it here in the States? eN cgcle IllIlW.
