The racing was great, as usual; Yamaha rider Jonathan Dove and Suzuki-mounted Jesse Van Patten showed everyone the correct way around the track. When the gate dropped for the 85cc (12-13) main event, Dove took the holeshot, with Van Patten right on his rear wheel and the rest of the field close behind. Dove and Van Patten were on a mission to put some distance on the rest of the pack, and they started a battle that would last for the entire race. The two riders rounded the first lap almost side by side. These guys were driving through turns like the fastest Pros, and they were hammering the whoops with throttles pinned, never checking up. The speed that these kids were carrying over all of the jumps and obstacles was almost unbelievable. The battle continued until Van Patten bobbled in a turn and gave Dove a little breathing room, but on the next lap Dove made a mistake and allowed Van Patten to pull back up. By now they were starting to lap the rest of the pack, and this could have been the turning point of the race if either rider got held up in lapped traffic. Both riders carved through the slower riders like they were not in the way at all. Van Patten put on an impressive full·bore charge on the last couple of laps to catch Dove, and he managed to close the gap to a very narrow margin, but when the checkered nag flew, Dove took the win, Van Patten was second, and Keelan Cherry placed third. The final class of the night put on quite a show as well. The "Dash for Contingency" Pro Am contest brought out the best riders of the night, and they put it all on the line for those contingency bucks. The gate dropped and YZ 125 rider Troy Miller, YZ426F pilot Josh Thompson and RM250-mounted Lonnie Brown all went out side by side. Brown attempted to hold the gas on to take the holeshot but came up a little long off the first jump and went down, almost hitting the wall and also taking himself out of the action. Thompson moved into the lead and kept his Yamaha out front to take the win. Suzuki rider Jacob Capps and Yamaha·mounted David Gravette put on the biggest charges and worked their way up from the back of the pack to finish second and third, respectively. When that contingency money is on the line, the riders dig deep to find that extra speed to pick up one or two more spots. Results 50 SHAFT: \. Alex Oglesby; 2. Blake l..llwson; 3. Mount Baker Motorcycle Clubhouse 027 Celebrates in Bellingham Talladega Agricultural Center: Jesse Van Patten hammers the whoops en route to the Supermini win at round six of the Alabama Arenacross Series in Talladega. Bv ANNIE MCCARTHY BELUNGHAM, WA, FEB. 10 The AMA District 27 awards ceremony was Trail Riders Clubgrounds in Bentley, Michigan, could not be used. The first half of the championships were decided two weeks earlier on January 26, but the ice did not survive the day, and the following day's events were post· poned until February 9. More than 300 riders competed in this year's championships. The winter weather in Michigan was unusually warm this year, and there were no other ice races held before the riders came to the Nationals, so many new riders and new equipment were being seen for the first time this year. In the Kold Kutter Shootout, sponsored by Koid Kutter and Interstate Oil Company, Ed Hieftje of Lansing, Michigan, led the 12-man field into tum one in the final. Following Hieftje for the first lap were Michiganders Chris Short of Lupton, Darren Ingle of Linwood, Nick Cummings of Mount Morris, and Brody Brown held on February 10, 2002, at the Mount Baker Motorcycle Clubhouse in Beliingham, Results Washington. The 500cc B Studded class was led wire to wire by Nichole Cheza of Clio, Michigan. Following Cheza were her fellow Michigan riders Steve Heinzelman of Saginaw and David Julian of Linwood. On the third lap, Julian passed Heinzelman on the back stretch. Tom Briscoe, who started the race in sixth, was on the move and was now breathing down Heinzelman's neck. After the white flag was shown by finish flagman Roland Curler, Briscoe made his move in turn one and took over the third position. Driver Jeff Kocher and passenger Steve Wilson - both of Hale, Michigan - teamed up to win the Medlumweight Rubber Sidecar championship. Kocher and Wilson led every lap, while behind them, driver Bob Scott Jr. and passenger Tiffany Sloan of Troy, Michigan, were trying to hold off driver Bob Scott Sr. of Gladwin, Michigan, and passenger Chris Liesen of Beaverton, Michigan. These two machines, driven by father and son, ran neck and neck until the final corner, when the senior Scott took over the second position. Finishing in fourth after starting in last were Dale Lupo and his grandson Zachary Lupo of Pinconning, Michigan.
