Bidwell Arena Duvall Over All Bv DAN MAHONV WICHITA FALLS, TX, JAN. 12 The J.S. Bidwell Arena once again played host to a Checkered Flag Promotions' Motor· Sports Extravaganza, presented by Eddie Hill's Fun Cycles. Monster Trucks were the headline act, but promoter Ed Beckley, always a flat-track supporter, also invited four classes of motorcycles to compete before an enthusiastic sellout crowd. The first Open Pro heat race was a runaway for young Merle Scherb. One of four brothers who race, Merle wowed 'em at the previous night's preliminary races, winning his first Open Pro final over a talented field. Willie McCoy finished second over Greg Teague and Corby Scherb. After being red-flagged and restarted, the second six-lap heat race went to Tulsa, Oklahoma's Joe Duvall after a thrilling last-lap pass around Kenny Tolbert, who competed aboard a "Chris Carr" 600 to show the folks that motorcycle tuning wasn't his only skill. Brian Isbell got the holeshot but was replaced at the point by Tolbert on the second lap. Duvall got around Isbell on the next circuit and went after Tolbert, taking the spot on the final turn. At the start of the main event, Duvall was off and running, immediately trying to put dis· tance between himself and the field. Merle Scherb went bar to bar with Tolbert for a few laps before setting off after Duvall, but the Decatur, Texas, rider ran out of laps. Greg Teague got around Toibert a couple of laps later to set the finishing order. As Duvall stylishly wheelied across the line, Corby Scherb finished fifth, with Isbell and Ryan Cheatum taking the next two spots. Willie McCoy had bad luck and wound up last man running. In the Open Amateur class, again, the previous night's final winner won the first heat race, as Scott Beckley led every lap over Van Simkins and Terry Wright. Logan Scherb and his brother Lucas finished one-two in the second heat, ahead of Lubbock, Texas' Chris Hamsmith. Local Wichita Falls rider Tyler Webb won the Pee Wee heat race and then jumped into the lead at the start of the main, but he fell victim to hard-charging Dakota Jones on the third lap and eventually dropped to third. behind Johnny Cone Jr. The Vintage Pro prelim went to Oklahoma City's Bill Walker, but the final was all Tim Newby's. The "Old Hippie" from Great Bend, Kansas, got the holeshot over Walker and was never threatened. Walker finished the 10-lapper ahead of Mitch Hovden, Johnny Isaacs and Blane Fore. Bill Snyder and Harry Cone rounded out the field. Rotax rider Scott Beckley made the Open Amateur contest look easy, as he led from the start, initially ahead of Texan Terry Wright and then, at the finish, over Hamsmith. Wright finished third in the eight-lap event, over Lucas Scherb, Jeremy Hinkle and Justin West. Tim Walker finished seventh with a last-lap pass on Phil Cheatum. Justin Haynie and Spencer Gaydon rounded out the top 10. Logan Scherb, Van Simkins and Kevin Ellingsworth did not finish, due to crashes. Results PfW: I Tyle:rWebb; 2. John Cone Jr.; 3. Dakota Jones.
