On lap four, Fournier was pushing Ranger, who in turn REPETlGNY, QUEBEC, CANADA, FEB. 3 ndrew Ranger, a 15-year-old from nearby Granby, Quebec, was victorious in both the 250cc Expert final and the 600cc Expert final at the second round of the CMRC Ice Race Series, in Repetigny, Quebec. Riding a Yamaha in the Ughtweight class and a Kawasaki in the 600cc class, Ranger won both of his qualifying races on his way to the finals, but that's not to say he had an easy time of it. KTM-mounted Pascal Picotte was in contention for the win in both Expert races, as was number-one plate holder Marcel Fournier, on a Yamaha, and Picotte's KTM teammate Dominic Beaulac. The 600cc Expert final was a frantic duel, with numerous lead changes on every lap. Ranger, who had won his qualifier over Fournier, battled with Picotte, who was heatrace winner over Beaulac. The front four quickly made it a race of their own. Picotte officially led laps one through nine before Ranger took a tight inside line going into turn one to start lap 10. The resulting bodycheck sent Picotte into a tank-slapper, putting the KTM off line and allowing first Fournier and then Beaulac to slip by. Picotte recovered quickly and on his back wheel passed the latter two on the back straight and set off after Ranger. The youngster held his poise and his position to record his first win on the day. The 250cc Expert final was without doubt the most exciting race of the day. The crowd of nearly 4000 roared its approval of every blockpass and wheelie. Picotte, who uses the ice-race series to stay sharp for the road-race season ahead, received the bulk of the crowd's cheers. A Picotte bolted into the lead, with Ranger and Beaulac immediately behind him. On lap three, Fournier 54 MARCH 6, 2002' cue Marina Repetlgny Ice Race Track: Fifteen-year-old Andrew Ranger (12) won both the 250cc Expert and 600cc Expert finals at the second round of the CMRC Ice Race Series In Repetlgny, Quebec. I e was forced to push on Picotte. This was full-contact ice racing, and the protective full front fenders that are mandatory in ice racing really proved their worth. Picotte was pushed off the racing line and into the loose snow on the outside. The KTM was in a complete full-lock slide, the studded back tire spinning in search of traction and the riders behind blinded by the snow-dust roost. Picotte was now fighting Beaulac for third. Out of this melee, Ranger took the lead and held it for two laps before the wily veteran Fournier showed the young upstart one of his patented high-low passes to take the point. For the next six laps, Fournier held the lead - but it was tenuous at best. Ranger was learning quickly. Showing smarts beyond his years, Ranger wisely sat back and waited, studying the champion's every move and on occasion showing him a front wheel. Picotte, meanwhile, had solidified his hold on third, over Beaulac. On the last corner of the 12th and final lap, Ranger pulled an in-your-face high-low pass on Fournier that was a photocopy of for the lead as well but settled for third. The 250cc Intermediate final was a six-lap romp for Mathieu Racine. Daniel Thiffault ran in second place for four laps before retiring from the race with motor maladies. Gregoire Boki inherited second and held off Patrick Racine, who was charging back after a poor start. Mario Payette took the holeshot to start the 600cc Intermediate final and held the point for five of the six scheduled laps. On the last lap, Jonathan Grenier, who had carved his way through the field after a poor start, passed for the lead on the back straight. Sonny Martorana ran second and stayed there for four laps before Grenier passed him. and one lap later Martorana fell victim to Mathieu Racine. The enthusiastic crowd found the Youth races entertaining. The smallwheeled competitors had a hard time on a track that had become very rutted. The cold didn't seem to affect the riders, though, as the racing was hot and heavy and many riders had a great day.
