STC Pro Circuit Winter Series Round 4: Highlands Motocross Park to contend with Taylor Whittaker, who was right on the rear fender of the JM Racing/Cycle Shack North Kawasaki KX65 of Baldwin. Out front, the Van Way-Turbyfill race was quickly pulling the two KTM riders away from the field. It wasn't long before the white flag came out, with few changes in the running order. Van Way held off Turbyfill for the moto win, though the Cobra/No Fear/Spysponsored Turbyfill still took the overall. Baldwin took second overall with a 4-3 showing. Third overall went to Whittaker (6-4). Justin Brown took the holeshot in the 125cc Beginner main event, but his lead was short-lived, as Chris Parkerson took over the point early. Parkerson looked like the favorite to win early on, but on the second lap he left the race with what appeared to Hedge (Yam); 3. Craig Swafford (Han); 4. Zac:h Payne (Han): 5. STORY AND PHOTOS BY BRIAN COMEAU HIGHLANDS, TX, JAN. 27 l:;7 he STC Pro Circuit Winter Series U made a second stop at Highlands Motocross Park for a follow-up to the previous week's action. With more than 540 entrants beating the track to pieces, Michael Keating stole the show in the Expert age classes, despite the rough track. Keating was busy all day, taking first in the Over 25 Expert class and following it up with a win in the Over 30 Expert class. Keating ended the day with a strong showing in the 250cc Expert class, taking second overall. Jacob Turbyfill also contested three classes, taking victories in the 51cc (7·8), Super Modified Pee Wee and 65cc (7 -9) classes. Jimbo Morton got to the first turn fastest and led the Over 25 Experts as they took to the track. Vince Kacir had his hands full with Rowdy Flanagan, who was challenging the Cycle Country / Answer/Pro Circuit-sponsored Kacir as they ended the first lap. Keating was running fourth, behind the battle between Kacir and Flanagan. Morton was checking out on the field as the race for second was heating up. Keating made his move on Flanagan, and in the blink of an eye Keating was in the runnerup spot, with Kacir nowhere to be found. The white flag was out and Morton had successfully distanced himself from the field. Keating was now ahead of Flanagan and fourth· placed Brian Johnson. Kacir found himself in fifth after his costly mistake. The field remained unchanged for the last lap, and Morton took the checkers ahead of Keating. Flanagan took the holeshot ahead of Kacir in the second moto, with Keating in third. Keating quickly put his JM/Maxima/O'Neal-sponsored Honda ahead of Kacir and Flanagan. Morton sat in fourth. Morton's race got harder when a crash in the first corner dropped him deep into the pack. Also remounting after a fall was Kacir, who went down in a sweeper. This moved Johnson into third, behind Flanagan. Morton rode hard and passed Kyle Abney on the last lap to take over fourth, but the top three were long gone. At the finish, it was Keating over Flanagan, with Johnson rounding out the top three. Dillon Van Way took the holeshot in the first 65cc (7-9) moto, ahead of Elias Sanchez Jr. and Beau Baldwin. Turbyfill sat in fourth but quickly worked his way up to second. As the field came around to complete the first lap, Van Way was setting the pace, with Turbyfill in second, ahead of Bryson Powers. On the second lap, Van Way hit the dirt hard on the track's big sweeper. Van Way reentered the race in fourth, behind Baldwin. This put Turbyfill out front, ahead of Powers. Cody Braswell was setting a fast pace, rounding the first lap in ninth and moving up to fifth by the second. Van Way had more trouble on the third lap, this time dropping outside the top 10. As Turbyfill came around to take the white flag, the battle for second was in full fury. Braswell had worked his way into third and was pressuring Powers for second. The two KTM riders raced hard on the last lap, with Braswell coming out ahead of Powers when they crossed the line. Baldwin took fourth. In the second moto, Van Way again took the holeshot. Baldwin had be mechanical problems. This put Cody Riggins in the lead, with a hardcharging Joshua Wade behind him. Brown was still holding on to third, ahead of Chris Leach. Then Wade took the lead from Riggins with only two laps remaining. Leach suffered a mishap that had him sidelined early, and Stephen Baker now found himself in fourth. At the finish, it was Wade ahead of Riggins and Brown. Baker held on to fourth, ahead of Ryan Haywood. eN Highlands MotDcross Park Highlands, Telas Results: January 27, 2002 IRDund 41 51 (4-6): 1.
