to the tail of Brown during the previous few laps, and the battle was heating up. On lap 13, Reed went to the inside of Brown before a triple, and the two jumped side-by-side. Reed had the inside line into the next turn, and he took over the lead for good. With Byrne still on the ground a lap later, Reed actually doubled the triple, while Brown continued to roll it. Brown seemed to think that the red-cross flag was out, but apparently it was not. Brown backed off the pace dramatically, thinking that he might be handed a win, while Reed kept charging away to the checkers. Dowd passed Payne for fifth in the closing laps, and Reed was one happy Aussie after crossing for his first 125cc win in his first try. "This means a lot to me," Reed said. "I thought that Byrne would honestly be my toughest competition, and it's unfortunate that he went down. I hope he's all right." Brown, Antunez and Ward crossed next, and Antunez later said, "This is a big weight off my back.
