The dynamic duo took ownership of six different classes, winning an amazing 12 motos between them. Rain the night before the race left conditions soggy, to say the least, on the morning of the event, but the promoters spent the better part of the pre-dawn hours prepping the track and pushing the mud off to the sides. Conditions improved throughout the day, and the course evolved into an awesome racetrack by the day's end. The day's big winner was, without a doubt, 13-year-old Mike Alessi, who became the first racer in CMC Golden State history to win the 85cc IJ 50 BEG: 1. J.ssy Arthurs (Hon). SO (0-6): 1. At round three of the CMC Golden State Series North, red rider Mike Alessi became the first rider in the history of the series to win the 85cc (12-131. 85cc Open, Supennlnl, 125cc Schoolboy and 125cc ln1ennediate classes with perfect scores. (12-13), 85cc Open, Supermini, 125cc Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate classes via a perfect 10-moto sweep, all on the same day. "Yeah, that was cool," Alessi said. "The best part is just getting out there and riding. Seemed like I had to go to the line like every other race, but hey, that's what I like best." "Mikey" (as his crew calls him) had an interesting experience in the 125cc Intermediate race after going down just after the first-moto start. "Well, it's weird when you race both an 85cc bike and a 125," Mike explained. "On an 80, you keep it Alessi, who weighs 95 pounds and stands about 5 feet tall, remounted and then successfully worked his way back through the entire field and still won with a 10-second lead by the finish. Mike's younger sibling Jeff stepped up as well, finishing with respectable top-three rides while battling for most of the day with Idaho's Jake Weimer, who has brought new strength to the Honda of Houston Mini squad for the 2002 Amateur race season. Jeff also won the 125cc Junior contest. David Boothe appeared to be the day's top Pro after a pair of moto wins in the 125cc Pro division, but as fate would have it, a fall in the 250cc contest left Boothe in the runner-up position, behind Yamaha-mounted Paul Temmerman, whose consistency paid off for the overall victory. The Vet classes were full to the brim, and the ever-popular Steve Nelson looked faster than ever in the Vet Intermediate class, putting his yellow Suzuki up front for the top spot on the podium. Mike Hodges and Steve Thinger argued over second place all day, but in the end the nod went to Hodges. Jake Sannon and Anthony n cue I e _ 1M S FEBRUARY 20. 2002 37
