Perhaps equally interesting was the fact that Bud Ught Yamaha's Australian Michael Byrne (351 won the first heat I'lICe McGrath kept the Floridi- .t An8heIm III. an honest for the entire eight-lap event. After Carmichael's holeshot, McGrath hounded the champ lap after lap, gaining ground on parts of the track and losing it in a couple of others. Meanwhile, points-leader David Vuillemin was lurking in third, trying for a while to pass McGrath (and coming close) before setting back and taking notes. Carmichael held on for the win, with McGrath a popular se<:ond and VuillemJn third. Taking the heat's final transfer was Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ezra Lusk. Prior to that show, SaBe Suzuki's Travis Pastrana had established an early heat-one lead by passing Arnsoil/Dr. Martens Honda's Michael Byme, and the kid looked fast and smooth for several circuits (despite a swap/pogo through the whoops on one lap). At the midway point, however, Pastrana went down after the finish-line jump, handing the lead back to Byme. The Australian led to the finish, though he was challenged first by teammate Mike laRocco and then by Team Honda's Emesto Fonseca. Byrne won over the Costa Rican, with laRocco taking third. SaBe Suzuki's Kevin Windham spoiled the Honda party in the last transfer spot. "I got off to a great start," Byme said. "Hopefully, I'll get another start like that.· "There's some good racing out there," Carmichael said after his heat win. "The first heat was good, and we had a great race too. It's going to be interesting in the main." In the first semi, Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Stephane Roncada led from start to finish, holding off Pastrana at the finish. Team Honda's Nathan Ramsey was third on the factory Honda four-stroke, with Nielsen Enterprises Honda rider James Povolny Jr. and Blackfoot Honda's Heath Voss next. "I feel 1DO-percent," Roncada said after high-flving Pastrana. "This year, I've been working so hard...I'm riding like I know how to ride." Blackfoot Honda's Jean-Sebastien Roy took his thumper to a semi-two win after an early pass on Powerhouse Yamaha's Daniel Blair. Moto XXX/DGY Yamaha's Nicholas Wey was a distant second, but well ahead of LCR Racing Yamaha's Ryan Clark. MotoworldRacing.com Suzuki's Damon Huffman was fourth in front of Blair. "The CR450 is awesome," Roy said. "It brings something new to me. It's a totally slick track, so the power works good." After a huge tum-one crash in the Last-Chance Qualifier, Moto XXX/DGY Honda's Kyle Lewis se<:ured the win over Pro Caliber Suzuki's Isaiah Johnson, who came out on top of a tight battle with Ted Campbell, the winner of the $250 Racer X Gas Card award, who said, "It will sure help for Indy."
