Mancuso was on his tail. Just as in the 125cc contest, Mancuso got out into the lead before the first lap was over, and from there on he never looked back. By the third lap, the lone Pro, J.R. Vielle, had moved his way in front of Page into second place, where he stayed the rest of the race. Vielle won the Pro portion, Hamilton took over second, Page hung on to third, and Bryan Thibedeau took fourth. Some crazy action was seen in the 250cc Junior class, as Mitchell Robbins got the holeshot and just pulled away from everyone. Most of the attention was focused on the fight for second between good friends Curtis Wharton and Garren Elmer. The two were really going at it until Elmer fell on Wharton on the second lap. Amazingly, Wharton stayed up, and he cruised into a second-place finish, leaVing the Gas Gas-mounted Elmer a very disappointing fifth. In the end, the order was; Robbins, Wharton, Chris Hlavic, Aaron Gallington and Elmer. CN Clark County Fairgraunds BatIIegraund, Washington Results: January 6, 2002 (Round 4171 50 OIL·INJ: 1. Clark County Fairgrounds: Joey Mancuso was victorious in the 125cc intermediate class at the fourth round of the MX winter challenge, which doubled as round seven of the Clark County Arenacross series in Battleground, Washington_ Northwest Arenacross Nationals Series Round 1: Evergreen State Fairgrounds LaMastus, Smail Storm Monroe By behind LaMastus. However, LaMastus retained the point position to the finish to pocket the winner's share of the Pro purse, which pays contingencies from all major manufacturers. Smail made one more drive to the front of the field on the next-to-Iast lap but got bumped out of the position and Whipple grabbed second for good on the final lap to finish ahead of Binckley. Binckley banked a iarge sum of money for his third-place finish, followed by Carter, Johnson and then Smail, who got rolling again to salvage a disappointing sixth. Santoro, Scism, local Suzuki rider Albert Odom, Doni Wanat and McAlister rounded out the top 10. There were several other competitive classes as well, such as the 60cc (9-11) and 60cc Open classes, both of which were dominated by Idaho's Matt DeAtley. The Kawasaki rider from Lewiston walloped the competition in the two classes, leading both from start to finish. KTM riders Brandon Simpson and Bobby Dean were DeAtley's closest competitors, but neither could put the stops to DeAtley's domination. The elder of the two DeAtley brothers, Sam, polished off the competition in the ultra competitive Supermini class. Though 31 riders were entered in the class, only 10 would make the elite final. Mac's Cycle-backed Sam DeAtley was the cream of the crop in the final, placing his Kawasaki into the winner's circle. Yamaha-mounted Tyler Egbert finished second, ahead of Suzuki rider Tevin Tapia, Matt DeAtley, Nick Bergley and Trevor Mills. Honda riders Tyson Blood and Brandon Thomas, two of the Evergreen State's top Intermediate riders, went at it in the 125cc Intermediate final, but on this day it was Blood's turn to shine, as he held off all of Thomas' challenges. Kawasaki rider lack Storey ran a solid third to the Honda pilots throughout the six-lap finale, finishing in the position ahead of Craig Bergemeier, Rodney Spangler and Spokane's Heath Robertson, the sixth-place finisher. Skagit Powersports' Bergemeier grabbed the lead in the 250cc Intermediate final and took advantage of a poor start on Thomas' part to score a win in the main event. Honda rider Tyler Meyer ran second for much of the race until Thomas overtook his fellow CR rider with one lap remaining to finish second. Meyer, Trevor CLAV liGHT MONROE, WA, DEC. 16 K TM USA-backed Jimmy LaMastus sent the competition a message with his winning performance at round seven of the Lee Collins-promoted Northwest Arenacross Nationals Series. LaMastus, who this year finished fourth in the AMA Western Four-Stroke National Series, scored convincing overall win in the 250cc Pro main event, besting Yamahamounted Washingtonians Jay Whipple and Billy Binckley. Another of the many KTM riders on hand, former three-time AMA Western Four-Stroke National Champion Lance Smail, went on a rampage in the 10-lap 125cc Pro main event to earn the overall win to make up for the KTM Canada-backed rider's sixth-place finish in the 250cc final. Trailing Smail at the finish were Whipple and LaMastus. Smail and Longview Motorsportssupported Tracy Johnson split wins during 125cc Pro qualifying. It was Smail, however, who nabbed the holeshot at the unle~shing of the 12rider final. LaMastus ran second to Smail, followed by Whipple, Garhett Carter and Johnson. The top three riders - Smail, LaMastus and Whipple - waged a dogfight for the lead, but Smail had a lock on the position. The fight for second-place, though, went back and forth between LaMastus and Whipple. Whipple, a perennial topplacing rider on the Canadian National Motocross Series, got around Idaho's LaMastus on lap five and remained there to the finish to trail Smail but finish ahead of LaMastus and Carter, who held a lock on fourth place throughout the final. Jeremy Santoro finished fifth, while Johnson, despite a choice pick on the gate for the final, finished sixth. Shon Series, Jeremy Scism, Mitch Merritt and Keil Krogstadt rounded out the top 10. LaMastus rebounded from his third-place finish in the 125cc final by grabbing the lead at the start of the 250cc main event, with Smail, former National number holder Binckley, Idaho's Chaun McAlister, and Carter giving chase. Smail gradual fell back to midpack, first losing a position to the Suzuki-mounted McAlister on lap three before eventually dropping to sixth. A lap later, though, McAlister dropped out of action, allowing Binckley, who is best known for making several AMA Supercross 250cc main events, to move up a position, cycle n e _ 51: FEBRUARY 6. 2002 43
